Robots were roaming the classroom of first grade teacher Deb Edgerly on Nov. 18 as students were introduced to computer programming at Newbridge Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District.
Technology integration specialist Michael Bevilacqua visited Ms. Edgerly’s class with Dash robots, and the mobile blue devices filled with lights and sensors quickly had students engaged. It was their first coding lesson, as they used the Blockly app on iPads to program each robot’s movements. Students could simply drag and drop the commands to make the robot move forward, or turn left or right. Mr. Bevilacqua gave them several challenges with different series of movements, culminating with students having to program their robots to follow the path of a square.
