The Brandon-Evansville volleyball team went 3-1 at a tournament in Browerville on Saturday.
The Chargers (6-1) fell in a three-set match against New York Mills before winning 25-19 and 25-16 against Browerville in two sets. Brandon-Evansville then won three-setters against Clinton-Graceville-Beardsley and Verndale to walk away with the three wins.
“With the season being a couple of weeks old, we were excited to go against some of the favorites in the section,” B-E head coach Kelly Olson said. “We have a few issues to work on moving into next week, but overall we had a successful day in Browerville.”
New York Mills is the defending Section 6A champion after going 29-4 in 2018, and Olson said his players were excited to see how they stacked up against the Eagles. B-E won the middle set 25-19 but fell in the first and third by scores of 25-18 and 15-9.
“Browerville is playing better than last year and (Tigers’ head coach) Mary (Irsfeld) does such a great job coaching. They are always a tough match,” Olson said. “Of course, CGB beat us last year to end our season and the kids were really focused moving into that match. With Verndale, we wanted to end the day on a winning note. We were disappointed going 2-1 and playing the fifth-place match, but we were happy with the results of the day. Mary runs a great tournament with competitive matches all the way through in both pools.”

Olson felt the focus of the girls was where it needed to be most of the day.
“Our passing was key in our victories and hurt us in our loss,” he said. “The girls have some work to do in order to clean up a few issues, but looking towards the middle part of our schedule, starting with Henning on Tuesday and Ashby on Thursday, we have a pretty good understanding what we need to work on.”
