Georgia Bulldogs first basketball game canceled due to COVID-19

ATHENS, Ga. — The Georgia Bulldogs are struggling to get their men’s basketball season started because of COVID-19 outbreaks in their opponent’s locker rooms.

Georgia had to cancel their game with Columbus State on Wednesday because of cases of coronavirus within the Cougars’ team.

This is the second game this week to be cancelled. Georgia lost a game scheduled against Gardner-Webb on Sunday because of positive COVID-19 tests on that team.

“This is obviously a situation unlike any other I’ve had to deal with in my 31 seasons of coaching college basketball,” head coach Tom Crean said. “We’re extremely disappointed for our players and for our fans. We were so excited to play today. To all our fans, bear with us. It’s going to be this kind of year in college basketball. We certainly hope for the best for Columbus State’s program, both health wise and during the season.”

The school has quickly scheduled a replacement game for the weekend. Georgia will now open their season against Florida A&M on Sunday at 2 p.m.
