Eureka: The Friendship Circle dance takes place every Tuesday from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at the Humboldt Grange Hall, 5845 Humboldt Hill Road. Admission is $5. Coffee and snacks are provided (you can bring your own drinks). Everyone is welcome. Live music will be provided.

On conifers
Bayside: The Humboldt Bay Mycological Society will meet Wednesday evening at the Humboldt Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 24 Fellowship Way. “Conifers of the Klamath Mountain Region” is the topic of a presentation by Michael Kauffmann, author of “Conifer Country: A natural history and hiking guide to 35 conifers of the Klamath Mountain region” and “Conifers of the Pacific Slope: A field guide to the conifers of California, Oregon, and Washington.” The meeting is open to the public. Doors open at 7 p.m. with mushroom “show and tell” (bring mushrooms you would like to have identified), then a short business meeting at 7:30 p.m. will be followed by the featured presentation. Kauffmann’s free talk will emphasize identifying and finding the diverse conifer species of the Klamath Mountain Region along with some of the more common pest and fungal pathogens with which they associate. Whether folks are looking for fungi that are known to have mycorrhizal associations with, or saprotrophic preferences for, specific trees, or are attempting to identify fungi growing on or near trees, it is essential as a mycologist at any level to have an understanding of different types of trees and an ability to identify them. Because of the ecological relationships between trees and fungi, an understanding of either partner is increased by gaining a greater knowledge of the other.
Alliance meets
Eureka: The North Coast People’s Alliance will present a discussion about “Compassionate Migration: What Is To Be Done?” on Wednesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Labor Temple, 840 E St. Speakers include Dr. Joseph Giovannetti, professor of Native American Studies at HSU; Mitch Higa, who will share stories of his family’s imprisonment in Japanese internment camps; Christina Lastra of Centro del Pueblo and Buenlucha, who will speak of her experiences working with undocumented students in Humboldt County; and Latinx members of Centro del Pueblo who will share their experiences and struggles settling in Humboldt County. A guided discussion follows. The evening is sponsored in collaboration with Cooperation Humboldt and Centro del Pueblo.

Play festival
Arcata: An Apprentice Entertainment “10 Minute Play Festival” is slated for Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m. at the Arcata Playhouse, 1251 Ninth St. Tickets are $10 general. Apprentice Entertainment will be showcasing, “Hope and James,” “The Broadcast” and “Genesis,” three original plays written, directed, designed and performed by local teens. AE is a youth-led, after-school arts collective that meets every Tuesday at the Arcata Playhouse to participate in a variety of activities. This teen collective creates theater, plans special events and makes a yearly zine composed of prose, poetry, and art. While attending, teens learn the ins and outs of event planning, promotion and design, with a focus on promoting an inclusive community. For more information, call 707-822-1575.
Activist group
Arcata: 350 Humboldt, a climate activist organization, will hold its monthly meeting Thursday at 6 p.m. at El Chipotle Restaurant, 850 Crescent Way. A panel will share its views on the use of bio-fuels as a source of local energy generation. All are welcome.

Eureka: Gamma Epsilon Master will meet at the home of Lois Freeman at 1 p.m. Thursday. Kathy Fredrickson will be the hostess and the program is titled “Surprise.”

Night of blues
Westhaven: The Westhaven Center for the Arts will present Third Friday Blues with “Blues Through the Years” Friday at 7 p.m. Musicians include Jim Lahman on guitar, Ron Perry on harmonica, Bill Moehnke on drums and Dale Cash on bass. Dancing is recommended. Admission is on a $5 to $10 sliding scale. Refreshments will be available. The Westhaven Center for the Arts is located at 510 S. Westhaven Drive, just south of Trinidad.
Book reading
Eureka: Booklegger invites the public to a reading by local writer, poet, activist and educator Dylan Collins on Friday at 6 p.m. Booklegger is located at 402 Second St. Collins, who is the host and creator of Word Humboldt, a community spoken word and open mic series in Arcata, has run creative writing workshops and participated in spoken word events in communities from Maine to California. He is celebrating the release of his new book, “Love Poems We Write Ourselves,” which he calls a love letter of survival, and which features poems he has written in the last six years. Fundraising show
Eureka: Allstar Theater Arts will present “Oktoberfest,” a fundraiser to help Allstars get to the National Performing Arts Festival in Florida. The event is set for Saturday, Oct. 19, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Eureka Woman’s Club, 1531 J St. There will be German food, a beer garden, music, games, raffles, dancing, desserts and lots of family fun. Tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for children and are available at www.allstartheatre.org.

Arcata: Ryan Lee will present a part two of a three-part lecture series titled “Georgi Ivanovitch Gurdjieff: An Introduction to the Man, the Writings and the Work” Oct. 23 from 7 to 9:30 p.m. at The Basement, 780 Seventh St. The cost is $10, or whatever attendees can afford.
Salad lunch
Arcata: Soroptimist International of Arcata invites the public to its annual fall salad luncheon Oct. 24 from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at St. Mary’s Leavey Hall, 1730 Janes Road. Tickets can be purchased at the door or from any Soroptimist club member. Adult tickets are $12; children ages 6 to 12 are $5; and children under 6 years are free. Enjoy a luncheon of ham and turkey, an assortment of salads, with rolls and dessert. Beverages are included. Take-outs will be available. Masquerade Ball
Eureka: Soroptimist of Eureka will host its second annual “Masquerade Ball” Oct. 25 at the Inn at 2nd and C in Old Town Eureka from 6 to 11 p.m. Dinner will be catered by Brett Shuler Fine Catering, and there will be an auction, games and dancing to Blue Rhythm Revue. Tickets are pre-sale $55 or two for $100 and $60 at the door. Those attending are encouraged to wear fancy clothes and a mask. Prizes will be given for the best dressed couple. Proceeds go to benefit women and girls in the community.
Halloween fun
Redway: KMUD Radio and the Mateel Community Center will present the annual “Halloween Boogie” Oct. 26 at the Mateel, 59 Rusk Lane. Sidecar Tommy from Beats Antique will play drums and DJ at this haunted circus-themed Halloween costume party along with DJs INI Brainstorm, J Riggs and Justone. A costume contest for all age groups with prizes for the best costumes as well as a bar and food will be available. Tickets are on sale now for $25 through Mateel.org. Proceeds benefit KMUD radio and the Mateel. The doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 9 p.m.

Focus groups
Eureka: In partnership with the National Weather Service, Nurture Nature Center will be hosting two focus groups in the Humboldt County area about flood and river forecast products. These focus groups will provide feedback to NWS to help improve their products for the community. A session for residents will be held at 6 p.m. on Nov. 4 at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center, 921 Waterfront Drive, Eureka. Participants in this session will be paid $50 for their time and input. A second session for emergency management and water resource professionals will be held on Nov. 4 from 10 a.m. to noon, also at the Humboldt Bay Aquatic Center. These focus groups are part of a social science research study funded by NOAA to improve river forecasting. Participants will be asked to answer questions and provide feedback about various forecast products. Participants can register online at www.focusonfloods.org.
