Exasperated parents have expressed very mixed responses to the news that Gary Lineker will be teaching their children Spanish in a new episode of CBBC's Celebrity Supply Teachers.

And former international football star Gary Lineker, 60, has taken to Twitter to reveal he will be teaching a superstar Spanish class.

He penned: 'BBC Lockdown Learning starts tomorrow. Programmes will include a daily helping of Celebrity Supply Teacher with my Spanish lesson (other lessons will be much better) airing on @CBBC on Monday Jan 18th at 10.05am.

However, many were quick to take to the comments section asking why a celebrity was being used instead of a professional - with many unaware that Gary is fluent in the language from his days playing for FC Barcelona.

'Nice gesture, but with a limited amount of broadcasting hours, surely the BBC should be using professionals?' wrote one, while a second joked: 'One key phrase for Brits Gary. ‘Two pints of Stella and a bag of crisps, please.’

In an episode of Celebrity Supply Teacher which aired on June 15, the Match of the Day presenter could be seen showing off his golden boots, before revealing how he learnt the language, and then demonstrating how to count to ten in Spanish.

But on hearing the news Gary will be presenting yet another episode, one person wrote: 'Think I will not be watching with my boy we need proper teachers not ordinary people.'

A second made a reference to Gary's deal to be the face of Walkers Crisps and joked: 'How do you say "I flog spuds" in Spanish, Gary?'

However, others praised Gary for putting his knowledge of the Spanish language forward in a time of need.

'Excellent!, if this helps just one child engage and be a support to teachers it will have been a resounding success,' commended one, while a second commented: 'He will be reading a script written by a teacher surely. In which case doesn’t matter who reads it.'

A third added: 'Thank you cbbc! My children’s primary are delivering no lessons and no online learning. This is much appreciated and most definitely needed.'

A fourth wrote: 'A great lesson, after watching it during the first lock down my 5 year old can count 1-10 in Spanish. Thank you Gary,' while a further added:

'Never mind the kids I will be watching !!! I want to brush up on my very limited conversational Spanish ( I’m 70 btw) well done you.'

Previous celebrity teachers included Geri Horner teaching English, Martin Bashir educating children on History and Marcus Rashford hosting a PE lesson.

Meanwhile, others were full of praise for the Match of the Day presenter, with one writing: 'Class! Thanks for doing that - can't wait to see it!' (pictured)
