The newly launched Motorola Edge (2021) has received the teardown treatment, revealing its strengths and (mostly) weaknesses in the process. The teardown comes courtesy of the YouTube channel PBKreviews.
The video reveals that the Edge (2021) is not the easiest smartphone to disassemble. Prying open the device requires specific tools, while the internal hardware is pretty complex as well. Overall, the Edge (2021) scored a subpar 5.5 out of 10 in terms of repairability.
One of the biggest challenges with the Motorola Edge (2021) is battery replacement. Motorola hasn’t offered pull tabs as other phones do, making the job more complicated than it should be. Moreover, replacing the power button or the volume keys requires the removal of the entire screen. The fact that the fingerprint scanner is embedded into the power button adds to the complexities.

Motorola launched the Edge (2021) in August amidst a plethora of leaks and rumors. The phone goes on sale today (Sep 2) via Motorola.com, Amazon, B&H, and Best Buy. The phone is available for an introductory price of $499.99. This is a $200 discount on the original asking price.
On the hardware front, the Motorola Edge 2021 is a mid-range smartphone with 5G capabilities. It offers a 6.7-inch 2460 x 1080 LCD screen protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 3. The performance is aided by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 778G 5G SoC.
While there’s no microSD card slot available, the phone offers a hefty 256GB of internal storage. Other features include 6GB of RAM, USB C, and the Android 11 operating system. Motorola claims that the phone has an IP52 water repellant design. While this makes the Edge (2021) capable of sustaining occasional splashes or rain, it’s not waterproof.
One of the highlights of the Motorola Edge (2021) is the triple camera on the back. The company uses a 108MP primary sensor backed by 8MP ultrawide and 2MP depth sensors. The front has a 32 MP sensor capable of wide-angle selfies.
There’s a large 5,000mAh battery underneath, which the company claims can last for up to 2 days. In real-world conditions, customers are likely to get at least a day’s worth of battery with the Motorola Edge (2021).
