Nearly 1,500 new coronavirus cases and 37 more deaths reported by Virginia health officials

Virginia reported nearly 1,500 more cases of the novel coronavirus on Monday, bringing the state’s total to 37,727. That’s the highest number of new cases reported in a single day in at least the past week.

The state also saw 37 more deaths, totaling 1,208.

The number of people hospitalized for COVID-19 is currently 1,376, according to the Virginia Hospital & Healthcare Association. Of those patients, 962 have tested positive and 414 are awaiting test results. More than 5,100 patients with the virus have been discharged after being hospitalized.

Currently 182 patients confirmed or suspected to have the virus are using a ventilator, the association says. Only a fifth of the state’s available ventilators are in use.

In southeastern Virginia, Accomack County continues to lead the region in cases, with 731.

Elsewhere in Hampton Roads, here are the latest numbers, compared to Sunday:

Chesapeake: 449 cases (up 16); 14 deaths (up 1)

Norfolk: 432 cases (up 33); 6 deaths (no change)

Portsmouth: 272 cases (up 10); 11 deaths (no change)

Suffolk: 300 cases (up 5); 31 deaths (up 2)

Hampton: 181 cases (up 7); 3 deaths (no change)

Newport News: 245 cases (up 8); 10 deaths (no change)

James City County: 197 cases (up 1); 16 deaths (no change)

Isle of Wight: 125 cases (up 1); 3 deaths (no change)

Northampton County: 216 cases (up 3); 17 deaths (up 1)

Poquoson: 7 cases (no change); no deaths

York: 69 cases (up 1); 3 deaths (no change)

Williamsburg: 43 cases (no change); 3 deaths (no change)

Mathews: 5 cases (no change); no deaths

Middlesex: 12 cases (no change); no deaths

Gloucester: 30 cases (no change); 1 death (no change)
