Bistro One Twelve permanently closed

Bistro One Twelve at The Tannery (1060 River St., https://bistro112sc.com) announced Tuesday that it is shuttering its doors permanently “due to the impacts of COVID” and thanked the community for its support. In August, owner Shannon Madison posted on social media they would be closed all August due to COVID-19 and planned to re-evaluate options in September. A graduate of New York’s French Culinary Institute, Madison opened Bistro One Twelve in 2018.

Several farmers markets reopen after fire-related closures

The Westside Santa Cruz farmers market reopened Saturday, and the Felton market reopened Tuesday. Both were temporarily closed due to the CZU August Lightning Complex fire. The Scotts Valley market will reopen Saturday in a new location, the Kmart parking lot off Mount Hermon Road, because Cal Fire headquarters is operating out of the traditional market spot. The Pratt Family has donated the space for the rest of the 2020 season. The Wednesday downtown and Sunday Live Oak markets are continuing with their normal schedules. Manresa Bread does popup Saturdays at Mentone

On Sept. 5, Manresa Bread started the first of four consecutive popups at Mentone (174 Aptos Village Way). From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. (or sellout), customers can purchase bread and pastries on each Saturday in September. Last Saturday’s offerings included levain and whole grain bread, croissants (plain and chocolate), Kougin Aman (regular and raspberry), gluten-free blueberry lemon poppyseed muffins, and almond granola.

Colectivo Felix adds pickup empanada option

Last week, Colectivo Felix started offering a pickup option and also shifted its delivery window to County residents. People can pick up empanadas from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday from Colectivo Felix’s new commercial kitchen space (former Kelly’s French Bakery kitchen) in the Swift Street Courtyard. Delivery is available from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursdays and Saturdays; place orders by 8 p.m. the night before. Empanadas come in varieties including vegetarian and vegan selections (purchase by the half dozen or dozen); rotating desserts are also on the menu. Changes for Teen Kitchen Project’s annual fundraiser

Because of COVID-19, Teen Kitchen Project’s main annual fundraiser will be virtual this year, from 10:30 a.m. to noon Oct. 18. “Far Apart But Close At Heart” will feature first-hand stories from clients and volunteers. Advance tickets are required; those who donate $128 or more receive a VIP brunch box for two to enjoy during the event. Prepared by TKP teen chefs supervised by local chef Stephany Buswell (renowned for great cooking and her appearances on the Food Network), it will include a vegetarian frittata, cinnamon rolls, fruit, mimosas, and coffee. The quantity of boxes a donor receives increases depending how much they contribute. Visit teenkitchenproject.org for details or tickets. Non-profit TKP helps teens learn to create nutritious meals in commercial kitchens that are then delivered to individuals and families that are in crisis due to serious illness.

Love Apple Farms stand re-opens after evacuation

The Love Apple Farms farm stand originally opened in early August, allowing customers to come buy fresh tomatoes at its stand for the first time in several years. They just reopened after being closed for a couple weeks to due to evacuations after the big fire. The stand will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days this coming weekend, Sept. 12-13. After that, the schedule will be decided weekend by weekend. It’s located at the Love Apple nursery, 5311 Scotts Valley Drive. In addition to tomatoes, selections include items from Jeannie’s Jams. Food Trucks A Go Go series returns

After being on hiatus due to the recent fire, weekly Thursday series “Food Trucks To Go Go” Food Trucks A Go Go returns from 5-8 p.m. Sept. 17 with takeout dinner (no seating or eating on-site) at Scotts Valley Square on Mt. Haute Enchilada reopens, adds dispensary neighbor

The Haute Enchilada Café and Gallery (7902 Moss Landing Road, 831-633-5843) recently reopened and is offering to-go orders and outside dog-friendly patio seating with required reservations (starts at noon and last seating is at 5 p.m.). Takeout orders must be placed by 4 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. Visit www.hauteenchilada.com. Also, Salinas-based cannabis dispensary East of Eden (https://eastofedencannabisco.com) has opened a new branch adjacent to the restaurant. Visitors to the venues are encouraged to “…start by perusing the menu of edibles, tinctures, topicals, vaporizers and concentrates at East of Eden, then venture on to the Haute for a soon-to-be-famous High Iced Long Island Tea from the bar.”

Copal, Café Brasil add outdoor dining

Oaxacan restaurant and mezcal bar Copal (1203 Mission St., 831-201-4418, https://www.copalrestaurant.com), which opened in July, recently added outdoor seating. Reservations are recommended; they have six tables to start. The menu features dishes such as Albondigas soup, Tlayudas (with meat and avocado), and mole tamales and enchiladas.

Café Brasil (1410 Mission St., 831-429-1855, https://cafebrasil.us/) has reopened its outdoor seating from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. At lunch, selections include signature Prato Feito (rice, beans, salad and your choice of beef, chicken, fish or eggs) and Feijoada (Brazilian specialty featuring black bean stew with sausage).

Upcoming farmers market vendors

El Pájaro CDC Commercial Kitchen Incubator Program hosts a weekly booth at the Sunday Live Oak farmers’ market and rotates between the Westside and Scotts Valley markets on Saturdays. Upcoming vendor appearances are Alkebulan (vegan food with “flavors from different continents”) at Scotts Valley this Saturday and at Live Oak market this Sunday, and Hakouya at Westside Sept. 19 and Live Oak Sept. 20. See santacruzfarmersmarket.org.

Updates for local wineries

Integrity Wines continues its at-home winemaker tasting series at 1 p.m. Sept. 13, with winemaker Mark Hoover. Visit https://www.integrity.wine to order $40 tasting kits in advance which include seven 50-milliliter wine bottles.

Pelican Ranch (2364 Bean Creek Road, Scotts Valley, http://pelicanranch.com) is celebrating California Wine Month. They have two wine flights to choose from, each with five wines, from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. They have a wine sale, consisting of 2016 Santa Cruz Mts. Chardonnay and 2015 Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir (a total of only 10 cases remaining). “These are rapidly disappearing vintages from wonderful bottlings,” says owner/winemaker Phil Crews. Also, Crews is offering free local delivery of a ‘Harvest Wine Case’ from a list of six selections: to order, call or text 831-332-5359.

Wargin Wines is open with outdoor seating at both locations; they carry charcuterie boards from Sweet Fromage. Soquel (5015 Soquel Dr.) is open Wednesday-Sunday and Watsonville (11 Hangar Way) is open on Saturdays. Reservations are recommended at https://warginwines.com.

Toque Blanche launches Rancho Gordo benefit for Second Harvest

Through the end of September, for each pound of Rancho Gordo beans sold, Toque Blanche (1527 Pacific Ave.) is donating two pounds of RG beans to Second Harvest Food Bank Santa Cruz County. The store continues to be open for in-person shopping and online purchases (the latter with curbside or shipping options). Also, for its 10th annual “All-Star Lineup” national trade magazine Gourmet Insider recently chose Toque Blanche as one of three kitchenware retailer All-Stars that “…got creative, went the extra mile and shined through even during a pandemic..”

Whole desserts to-go now available at Chocolate

Because so many special occasions are taking place at home these days, the restaurant Chocolate (1522 Pacific Ave., 831-427-9900) is now offering “Special Occasion Desserts” for pickup. “With 48 hours’ notice we will also take custom orders including personal messages written on the cakes,” says owner David Jackman. You can order desserts on the web site at https://chocolatesantacruz.com. Choices include three-layer chocolate mousse cake, chocolate strawberry shortcake, tiramisu, amaretto chocolate swirl cheesecake, and chocolate cream pie.

Discretion Brewing, other local breweries partner for Fire Relief beer

Rob and Kathleen Genco, Discretion Brewing owners, had the idea to create a benefit beer, and 11 local breweries joined them. “Santa Cruz Strong,” a hoppy blonde ale, will be canned and released Sept. 16 and sold in 16-ounce cans at these breweries: East Cliff Brewing; Fruition Brewing; Humble Sea Brewing; New Bohemia Brewing; Santa Cruz Mountain Brewing; Sante Adairius Rustic Ales; Shanty Shack Brewing; Steel Bonnet Brewing; The Slough Brewing Collective; Uncommon Brewers; and Woodhouse Blending and Brewing. 100 percent of proceeds will be donated by each brewery to the Santa Cruz Community Foundation Fire Response Fund to support community members impacted by the August CZU Lightning Complex fires.
