Migrant man from El Salvador dies at Lordsburg Border Patrol Station in New Mexico

A 32-year-old man from El Salvador died early Thursday morning while in custody at the U.S. Border Patrol station in Lordsburg, New Mexico, officials said.

The man had been taken into custody by Border Patrol agents at about 9 p.m. and was being processed at the Lordsburg station "when he fell into medical distress," U.S. Customs and Border Protection said in a statement.

CBP said that attempts to revive the man were unsuccessful. A possible cause of death was not immediately released.

CBP added that the government of El Salvador, the Department of Homeland Security Office of the Inspector General and members of Congress have been notified.

The CBP Office of Professional Responsibility has begun an investigation into the death.

The Border Patrol has been under scrutiny regarding the deaths of migrants and the conditions and treatment of detained migrants.
