POWHATAN POINT — Hundreds of people turned out at Powhatan Point Marina Saturday for the 14th Annual Christmas in the Village — an event that has come to be a holiday staple and homecoming for many families in the community.

Dressed in colorful holiday attire or sipping on a cup of hot chocolate, many folks browsed through the nearly 50 craft vendor booths and tents scattered across the village marina parking area Saturday afternoon. Face painting, inflatable bounce houses and a train ride were just a few things available for children to enjoy. Also, in conjunction with Christmas in the Village, the Powhatan VFW 5565 and American Legion Post 228 held their Veterans Day Memorial Ceremony at the start of the day’s events.

Jeremy Sims, president of Christmas in the Village, said the festival is kind of holiday homecoming for many families throughout the community. He said they have also held the community’s Veteran’s Day Ceremony the past few years to coincide with the festival.

“This is definitely, the kick-off to the holiday season. … I think this is a good thing for the Village of Powhatan. It brings people in town and a lot of the businesses here do a lot of stuff as well,” Sims explained.

He said more than a dozen local businesses not only offer a tremendous amount of support to the Christmas in the Village event, but many offer specials at their businesses throughout the day. He said the Powhatan Senior Center also offered food throughout the day and the local Masonic Hall held a pancake and sausage breakfast with Santa in conjunction with the event.

Debbie Ogilbee of Powhatan said Christmas in the Village is a wonderful family event that she has attend for a several years. She said the festival serves as kind of a holiday homecoming for many area families.

“It’s a very fun event. It brings people home. It’s nice to come and visit because people will save this weekend to come home and visit,” she said.

Vernann MacMillan of Barnsville, who was busy selling a variety of holiday crafts, said she has participated as a vendor for a number of years and it is a wonderful community event. She said every year, she has the opportunity to meet and talk to a lot of wonderful people.
