The obstacles in Portsmouth's way as Championship clubs - including Barnsley - join race for Millwall midfielder Ben Thompson

Pompey will need to see off Championship interest in Ben Thompson if they are to lure the midfielder back to Fratton Park.

And in another obstacle to any move before Friday's EFL transfer window deadline (5pm), the Blues will have to offload at least one of their fringe players in order to finance any loan deal under current wage cap restrictions.

The Millwall dynamo tops Pompey’s wish list as they aim to bolster their midfield options.

However, it’s understood that the 25-year-old is keen to go out on loan given his lack of game time already this season.

Meanwhile, The News understands that Millwall would be willing to sanction a move if they were able to bring in a replacement.

Brighton’s Jayson Molumby is one such option for Lions boss Gary Rowett, after the Republic of Ireland international spent a successful loan spell at The Den last term.

He remains down the pecking order at the Amex Stadium and is being tipped to make a return to south London.

That could open the door for Thompson to leave in order to get much-needed minutes under his belt.

But with Championship clubs also circulating, Pompey will have a job on their hands to convince the midfielder to drop back down to League One.

Barnsley are believed to be admirers of Thompson, although their stance might have changed following manager Gerhard Struber’s decision last week to quit Oakwell and move to New York Red Bulls.

It’s believed Millwall would also prefer the player to remain in the second tier, not just for his development but also because a Championship rival would be in a position to pick up all of Thompson’s wages.

However, the Blues remain hopeful a compromise can be struck, especially if they can move on one or even two members of their current squad.

Paul Downing remains on the fringes and a move away from Fratton Park would suit both parties.

Meanwhile, Pompey would be willing to let James Bolton leave if suitable interest emerged between now and Friday.
