Courts in Bahrain have issued a string of guilty verdicts against Shiite activists and clerics, including a blogger who was sentenced to one year in prison for insulting the king and inciting hatred against the government.

Taiba Ismail, 36, was sentenced Wednesday for tweets she had written that were critical of the Sunni-led monarchy. Rights activists say she had already spent 65 days in prison in relation to the case.

Also Wednesday, courts in Bahrain sentenced three Shiite clerics and a television producer to terms ranging from one to two years in prison on charges related to a sit-in being held to protest a decision to strip the country's top Shiite cleric of his nationality. A fourth cleric was sentenced a day earlier to one year imprisonment on similar charges.
