Pa. reports 2,219 new coronavirus cases, its largest one-day total ever

The Pennsylvania Department of Health reported 2,219 new positive cases of coronavirus on Friday, bringing the statewide total to 190,579. This is the 18th consecutive day with more than 1,000 new cases reported, and has been confirmed by the department to be the largest number ever to be reported in a one-day total.

There are currently 1,068 hospitalized for the coronavirus, a number which is double that which was reported a month ago.

The number of tests administered within the last seven days between Oct. 16 and Oct. 22 is 235,737 with 10,840 positive cases. There were 39,757 test results reported to the department through 10 p.m., Oct. 22.

The Department of Health has stated it is seeing an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases among younger age groups, particularly 19 to 24-year-olds, noting there are more cases in younger age groups than in those ages 50 to 64 as well as those 65 and older.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 25,122 resident cases of COVID-19, and 5,455 cases among employees, for a total of 30,577 at 1,039 distinct facilities in 62 counties. Out of total death reported, 5,699 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care facilities. Additionally, approximately 11,906 of total cases are among health care workers.

There are 2,273 individuals who have a positive viral antigen test and are considered probable cases and 648 individuals who have a positive serology test and either COVID-19 symptoms or a high-risk exposure.

There are 8,625 total deaths attributed to COVID-19, an increase of 33 new deaths recently reported. Over 2,200,868 patients have tested negative to date.

The age breakdown of those who have tested positive for the coronavirus is as follows:

  • Ages 0-4: Approximately 1 percent
  • Ages 5-12: Approximately 2 percent
  • Ages 13-18: Approximately 5 percent
  • Ages 19-24: Approximately 14 percent
  • Ages 25-49: Approximately 36 percent
  • Ages 50-64: Approximately 21 percent
  • Ages 65+: Approximately 21 percent
