There's no denying that we've made a great deal of progress when it comes to acne acceptance in recent years, and it's largely due in part to people on Instagram who choose to celebrate their skin as it is rather than disguise it. Sure, the unfair stigma still exists to an extent, but the fact is, blemishes are nothing to be ashamed of and folks are finally starting to realize that. I mean, hello: They happen to almost everybody. What could be more human than that?

This is the message that Pittsburgh-based makeup artist Ana — aka @nightmaring on Instagram — is hoping to spread with her latest work, which features a few of her acne spots glamorously decorated with gemstones. The 23-year-old MUA posted a photo of the gorgeous look on Monday, January 19, along with a lengthy caption about acne positivity and the frustratingly persistent stigma that still surrounds the common condition to this day.

First, Ana explained that she was her own inspiration for the photo. "My pimples and blackheads on my cheeks glistening with fresh moisturizer on them made me want to make them gems! I didn’t want to put eyelash glue on my already inflamed cheeks so I did it on my nose!" she wrote.

Then, she dove straight into the stigma aspect: "Acne can be so frustrating and the stigma against it is honestly still bullshit. skin is super cool, it protects your body, it helps you exist in the physical world! Pimples help keep shit out of your skin and clean it and protect you!" she wrote. Additionally, she noted that the stigma against acne in America was created by soap companies to convince people they were dirty if they had acne. "Look it up, it’s ridiculous," she wrote.

In regards to execution, Ana only used two products to achieve this look: E.L.F. Cosmetics' Poreless Putty Primer and some mini gemstones she bought on Amazon "forever ago." This pack comes with a variety of different colors and only costs $11, so it could be an excellent option for anyone hoping to re-create the acne-inspired look at home.

Here's hoping we see more acne-positive looks like this one in 2020. Thanks for kicking it off, Ana.
