District court judge, Honorable Laurie Fontaine, swears in her son Garret Fontaine as an attorney in North Dakota at the Pembina County Courthouse in Cavalier, North Dakota.

CAVALIER —A district court judge in Cavalier County performed a swearing-in ceremony for her son Friday, Sept. 25.

Garret Fontaine graduated from the University of North Dakota School of Law and passed the bar earlier this month.

His mom, Laurie Fontaine, has been a judge for 22 years.

The annual admissions ceremony is usually at the North Dakota Supreme Court but was moved online this year due to coronavirus.

So instead, Garret invited a few family members to the Pembina County Courthouse and had his mom swear him in.

"I mean it's just really a fun this to see any of your children follow in what your career choice was," Laurie Fontaine said, "I'm just really proud of him, I always thought he might be a lawyer. Some people just have a deeply rooted sense of justice early and I think he had that."

The North Dakota Supreme Court held the virtual swearing in ceremony on September 18.
