What’s the first thing you would do if you were handed a phaser? Probably start pew-pewing and blasting your friends, right? And that’s exactly what happens in Decider’s exclusive look at this week’s new episode of Star Trek: Prodigy, titled “Dreamcatcher”.

In the new half hour, which starts streaming Thursday, November 11 on Paramount+, the crew of the USS Protostar is being outfitted with your regular assortment of Starfleet toys before their first away mission. That includes a tricorder, a phaser, and a cool new vehicle; all of which are completely alien to the, uh, aliens of the crew.

Thankfully, they have Hologram Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) there to help coach them through the tricorder, which is used for “data analyzing and sensing,” the phaser (which is helpfully set to stun), and the new vehicle, which we’ll get to in a second.

But first, since these bunch of goofballs don’t know the first thing about Starfleet, Jankom Pog (Jason Mantzoukas) has a little fun at everyone else’s expense, triggering a “gas sample” detection on the tricorder and then accidentally stunning himself with the phaser.

After that, though, it’s off to the hanger where Janeway reveals the piece de resistance: “The Runaway,” a vehicle with accelerated ion propulsion, tritanium chassis, holo-steering, and “hold onto your butts grab-handles.” And while the rest of the crew are headed off to explore a new planet, Janeway will hang back on the ship with alien weirdo creature Murf (Dee Bradley Baker).

Written by Lisa Schultz Boyd and Directed by Steve Ahn, Sung Shin, in the episode “the crew has their first away mission on an undiscovered planet that manifests their deepest desires, only to realize the planet has desires of its own.”

You can watch the rest of the clip above, and check out the full episode tomorrow on Paramount+.
