Fresh seafood spotlighted at Lucky California’s innovation lab

Lucky California’s renovated flagship store features new local fresh seafood.

Lucky California’s renovated Pleasanton, California, U.S.A. flagship store and innovation lab features new local fresh and frozen seafood products, offering unique experiences for shoppers in the meat and seafood department.

Formerly known as Lucky, the 68-store chain – which is under The Save Mart Companies umbrella – rebranded to Lucky California in May. Its Pleasanton store offers a “variety of dynamic food and beverage experiences” that celebrate local Tri-Valley purveyors and producers, Lucky California said in a press release, adding that there is more emphasis on fresh seafood and unique experiences for shoppers in the fresh seafood department.

“This store is all about sharing our passion for food and providing the best shopping experience, always with lower prices,” Save Mart Vice President of Retail Operations and Supply Chain Hal Levitt told SeafoodSource.

This new Lucky California store “truly captures Nicole Pesco’s vision to reinvent the Lucky brand to Lucky California,” Levitt said.

Pesco, Save Mart’s owner and former CEO, developed the Lucky California concept in 2015 “to celebrate and reflect the local and global products, tastes, and flavors of the diverse Bay Area food culture,” Levitt said.

“Now, in 2021, the current management team has brought forward and actualized that original vision, fulfilling the promise and evolving it to meet the needs of shoppers in this post-pandemic environment,” he said.

The renovated store features a “new and impressive selection” of fresh, frozen, and to-go seafood items, including whole and smoked fish, according to Levitt.  New items include whole wild king salmon, rockfish, branzini, black cod, striped bass, and sea bream. New smoked seafood offerings include king salmon, candied Atlantic salmon, and sturgeon.

Levitt said the store’s meat and seafood department features a full-service grill and “grill boss,” ready to grill purchases to each guest’s specifications, including custom marinades and seasonings.

“The grill boss even grills up veggies, so our guests simply take it to go and enjoy at home – meal solutions that are innovative and experiential,” he said.

Value-added seafood selections include shrimp spring rolls, sea bass spring rolls, sea bass dumplings, wonton crab, bacon-wrapped shrimp, shrimp scampi, and honey-jalapeño shrimp.

“Pleasanton and the Tri Valley is a food-forward region of the Bay Area and this flagship store offers shoppers a wide variety of their favorite seafood and meat items that they might not expect to be able to easily access in a traditional neighborhood grocery store and with Lucky California’s low prices,” Levitt said.
