THORNBURG, Va. — Two Hedgesville, W.Va., residents died Friday and a third had life-threatening injuries after the SUV in which they were riding crashed on Interstate 95 in Spotsylvania County, Va., according to Virginia State Police.

Passengers Frederick L. Thomas, 47, and Robert W. Rutherford Jr., 45, were ejected from a 2004 Ford Explorer and died at the scene as a result of their injuries, according to a news release from Virginia State Police.

The driver, Jahvante L. Winnagle, 24, also of Hedgesville, was taken to Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg, Va., police said.

Winnagle’s condition was not available Sunday.

None of the three men was wearing seat belts, police said.

Two other passengers, a man and a juvenile male, were taken to Mary Washington Hospital with minor injuries, police said. They were both wearing seat belts.

The crash on northbound I-95, at the 123.7 mile marker, occurred at 1:23 p.m. Friday, police said.

That area is north of Thornburg.

The SUV went off the right shoulder and hit the guardrail, police said. Winnagle overcorrected and the SUV overturned several times before coming to a stop on the left shoulder, police said.

The crash remained under investigation.

Virginia State Police were assisted by the agency’s Division 2 Accident Reconstruction Team, Spotsylvania Fire and EMS, the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia Department of Transportation.
