SEATTLE, WA β€” After more than two decades in business in downtown Seattle, the Pacific Place Barnes & Noble bookstore announced it would close Saturday, Jan. 18. The downtown location is the chain's latest casualty, as the former retail giant grapples with ownership turnover and plummeting profits, due in large part to strong competition from online sellers like Amazon.

The Seattle Times reports the downtown store is the second Seattle location to close in the past year; the Barnes & Noble at Westwood Village closed in January 2019. According to the Seattle PI, the last location remaining in Seattle is at Northgate Mall β€” a shopping center that is going through a major overhaul itself.

According to the Times, Barnes & Noble stores in Bellevue, Woodinville, Issaquah, Lynnwood and Southcenter remain open.
