USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin

Lincoln's Joseph G. Beattie has been named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist

Manitowoc Lincoln High School senior Joseph G. Beattie has been named one of 16,000 semifinalists from across the country in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

A news release from the program said semifinalists have a chance to continue in the competition for some 7,600 National Merit Scholarships worth more than $30 million that will be offered next spring.

To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the finalist level of the competition. More than 90% of the semifinalists are expected to attain finalist standing, the program said, and more than half of the finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship, earning the Merit Scholar title.

Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in spring 2021. The program said every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships that will be awarded on a state-representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 220 corporations and business organizations for finalists who meet their specified criteria, such as children of the grantor’s employees or residents of communities where sponsor plants or offices are located. In addition, about 180 colleges and universities are expected to finance some 4,100 college-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards for finalists who will attend the sponsor institution.

National Merit Scholarship winners for 2021 will be announced in four nationwide news releases beginning in April and concluding in July, the program said. The scholarship recipients will join more than 353,000 other people who have earned the Merit Scholar title.

Lakeshore Technical College will host a fall open house and blood drive

Lakeshore Technical College is hosting a fall open house for the general public from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 19 at the LTC Cleveland campus, 1290 North Ave.

The college said in a news release that visitors will be able to learn about the college’s many options, including courses still open for fall and spring programs that start in January.

Attendees will also learn about opportunities for professional or personal development.

LTC staff will be available to answer questions about paying for college, choosing classes, admissions and more.

At the same time and location, LTC is working to help support local demand for blood donors, so the community is invited to donate blood during the “LTC Cares Blood Drive.” The ongoing impact of COVID-19 has increased the need for blood donors.

Versiti, the blood center LTC is working with, is performing the SARS CoV-2 antibody test as part of its standard testing. Donors will be informed if they have antibodies reflective of a prior COVID-19 infection. They will also receive a $10 e-gift card as a token of appreciation.

COVID-19 safety protocols, including face covering and physical distancing requirements, will be in place during both events. Visitors are asked to take their own masks to the events.

Registration is requested for the open house, though not required, at gotoltc.edu/open-house.

Appointments for the blood drive are recommended. For more information, visit gotoltc.edu/blood-drive.
