Voice assistant-enabled Deebot N79S robot vacuum cleans up competition

Voice assistant-enabled Deebot N79S robot vacuum now deeply discounted

When your older sibling was one of the best-selling robot vacuum cleaners on Amazon, you have big shoes to fill. Luckily, the latest automated cleaning contraption from Ecovacs has been more than up to the challenge. The Chinese company has given the original robotic vacuum cleaning team at Roomba quite the run for its money, and now, it’s heating up the competition once again. The Deebot N79S, the follow-up to the wildly successful Deebot N79 and a best-seller in its own right, has slashed its price to $150 on Amazon. Fulfilling its promise to make cleaning easier than ever, this Alexa-enabled bot will clean your home on your behalf — all you need to do is say the word.

With more than 1,400 customer reviews on Amazon, the Deebot N79S is an Amazon’s Choice robot vac and scored a spot as one of Digital Trends Best Robot Vacuums of 2018. It features many of the same attributes as the previous model, like smartphone app controls, smart motion navigation, and anti-collision and drop sensors. But the main difference will lie in its smart assistant compatibility with Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

With a single voice command to Alexa, you can now send your robot on a cleaning spree. It also promises strong suction, with 1,000 pascals worth of cleaning power. There are four different cleaning modes capable of tackling various surfaces — if you need general cleaning, go for Auto mode. The Single Room option will address just one room at a time, whereas the Edge mode will focus on those hard to reach corners. Finally, Spot cleaning will help you get out tough stains.

The vacuum also charges automatically, so you don’t have to guide it back to its power dock. In case the device gets stuck in a tricky spot, it will send you a smartphone alert so you can rescue it via the Wi-Fi remote control.

The N79S is also lighter than its predecessor, so if you do find yourself manually moving the bot around, it shouldn’t cause you to break a sweat. In addition to controlling the N79S with voice commands, you can also use the companion app to control your bot’s motion. With the press of a button in the app (from wherever you are in the world), you can take advantage of the robot’s strong suction power to clean hardwood floors, low-pile carpets, and everything in between. You also can use the app to schedule cleanings, so you always have a tidy home.

The Deebot N79S made its debut on Amazon in March with great success, where its nominal $300 list price has an average $225 discounted price. With today’s low $150 deal price, the second-generation Deebot robot vac will likely be cleaning many more homes in the post-holiday season.

Updated December 14, 2018: Added information about N79S’ popularity and extra low price deal.

Roborock S8 lineup brings next-gen cleaning skills to CES 2023
The Roborock S8 Pro Ultra in a kitchen.

Roborock is one of the biggest names in the world of robot vacuums. CES 2023 was another big showing for the company, as it revealed the Roborock S8 lineup that consists of three products, one of which offers advanced self-cleaning capabilities while docked.

The S8 Pro Ultra is the most exciting robot vacuum of the bunch, offering suction power that maxes out at 6,000Pa, a new dual rubber roller brush that’s great for tackling troublesome pet hair, and a mopping system that can retract 6mm to prevent cross-contamination when heading back to the dock. There’s also an innovative mopping system (dubbed VibraRise 2.0), which allows for floors to be scrubbed 3,000 times per minute and is robust enough to handle just about anything you throw at it.

Lidar is the gold standard of robot vacuum navigation, but it’s not perfect
Lidar sensor in the 360 Robot Vacuum Cleaner S10 working

Any robot vacuum owner can understand my frustration over having to occasionally save my bot from gobbling up a pair of socks, being tripped up by pesky wires, or even getting stuck under furniture. For our robotic servants, it’s like exploring the frontier each and every time they embark on a new cleaning -- one that’s filled with unexpected traps and obstacles to avoid. You could say that no two cleanings are ever alike. That’s unless you’re pretty good at precleaning.

What’s been a tremendous asset for many bots in the last few years has been the adoption of lidar (light detection and ranging). You can easily tell if it’s using it or not based on how the robot navigates, just because lidar-equipped bots tend to clean in straight or s-shaped patterns. Recently, I’ve been testing out the 360 Robot Vacuum Cleaner S10, which happens to employ not one, but three lidar sensors to allow it to see better in 3D. Even though lidar continues to be the gold standard, it’s still not entirely without issues.
Lidar’s great when it comes to efficiency
