The high school football playoffs in Nebraska came to a close over the weekend with championship games in all seven classifications. Omaha Westside was among the winners, beating Elkhorn South 37-21 for the Class A title and earning the No. 1 spot in the state’s final MaxPreps Top 25 computer rankings.
That victory, coupled with its 12-0 record and tremendous play this season, makes Westside the 2020 MaxPreps Champion for the state of Nebraska.
Westside's win brought home the school's first state title since going back-to-back in 1981 and 1982. The Warriors reached the championship game in 2006, 2013 and 2019 but came up short in each appearance.
Senior quarterback
Cole Payton led the way for Westside against Elkhorn South, passing for 218 yards and two touchdowns while running for 139 more and three scores. He finished the season with over 1,700 yards passing, 1,000 yards rushing and 39 total TDs.
Along with 1,300-yard rusher
Dominic Rezac, Payton kept Westside’s offense humming throughout the fall as the Warriors averaged 44.4 points per game.
Other unbeaten teams in the final Nebraska MaxPreps Top 25 include Class C1 champion Pierce (12-0) and Class C2 titlist Ord (12-0).
