Coastal Tourney Highlights: VMI signee Trey Bonham breaks UMS-Wright’s men’s scoring record

Senior guard Trey Bonham became UMS-Wright’s all-time leading men’s scorer Tuesday night, pouring in 23 points in an 80-62 win over McIntosh during the RHS Pre-Thanksgiving Tournament.

Bonham, a VMI signee, passed Norman Waldrop’s record of 1,636 established in 1998. Bonham now has 1,636 points. The school’s all-time leading scorer overall is Brooke Beard with 1,805 points.

UMS outscored McIntosh 24-10 in the fourth quarter to pull away. Chapman Johnson also scored 23, while freshman Bridges Simmons had 14 and Sam Stewart hit 3-of-4 3-pointers to finish with 12.

UMS (7-1) will play host Robertsdale in the consolation championship at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Fairhope handed UMS its first loss of the year in the tournament on Monday. Riley Leonard scored 32 to lead the Pirates to a 71-66 win. Bonham had 23 and Johnson 19 for the Bulldogs.

OTHER HIGHLIGHTS:

-- Sophomore Tony Carmichael scored 25 points as Robertsdale held off Jackson 58-57 in the annual RHS Pre-Thanksgiving Tournament. Carmichael hit five 3-pointers. Demontre Prim added 14 points. The Golden Bears (3-5) play UMS-Wright at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday for the consolation game.

-- University Lab defeated Blount 52-43 in the semifinal round of the Joe Barlow Thanksgiving Tournament in Baton Rouge. Jordan Harris led Blount in scoring with 12 points. Blount made just 6-of-15 free throws.

-- Jordan Bell and Clifton Granderson scored 15 points each as Williamson defeated Mobile Christian 79-34 in the Williamson Roundball Classic. Bell also had 15 rebounds and five blocked shots. Granderson had 10 rebounds and five assists. Jacameron Horn followed with 14 points, Justin Brown had 13 and JaAllen Gray had 11. The Lions (5-2) travel to Escambia, Fla., on Tuesday.

-- Faith Academy scored just six points in the first half but held Auburn to just 12 in the second half in a 46-40 victory in the Sneaky Pete Rebel Classic located at Vestavia Hills in Birmingham. Freshmen LJ Holifield provided a spark in the third quarter, draining two of his three second half 3-pointers. Sherman Davis also hit three 3s in the second half. Auburn held a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter at 26-25 but could not hold it. South Alabama football commit Caullin Lacy led Faith with 15 points, including 11 of 13 free throws in the final period.

GIRLS

-- Faith defeated LeFlore 35-25 in the Robertsdale Thanksgiving Tournament. The Rams will play McGill-Toolen at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday in the final. The Yellow Jackets tripped Eufaula 58-53. McGill trailed most of the fast half but rallied from 26-16 deficit, closing with a 9-0 run that included a Nya Valentine runner at the buzzer. The 8-1 Jackets forced 20 turnovers and won the battle of the boards by 11. Eufaula knocked 5 of the 6 threes in the first half and had nine steals on the day.

-- Zykerria Gulley scored nine points as Saraland defeated Williamson 29-24 on Day 2 of the Williamson Roundball Classic. Alex Caples had eight for the Lions. Also, Vigor defeated Murphy 48-39. Janiya Labyzon led the Wolves with 20. Joy Cousins led Murphy with 14.

-- Kaitlyn Knight scored 21 points as Foley defeated Gulf Shores 62-40 to advance to the championship game of the Battle of the Beach Tournament. The Lions (7-1) will face Pensacola at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Gulf Shores. Junior Jakiya Jackson added 12 points and junior MG Lymon scored 11.

-- Ariel Thompson scored 18 and Elissa Murry had 16 as Theodore beat St. Martin 63-48 in the semifinals of the St. Martin Thanksgiving Tournament. Drexelle Ward had six assists in the win. The Bobcats are now 10-1.
