Michigan Nears 10,000 Confirmed Coronavirus Cases; Deaths Top 300

MICHIGAN — Michigan is encroaching on 10,000 confirmed cases of the new coronavirus after more than 1,700 new cases were reported by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services Wednesday.

The state reported 1,719 new cases Wednesday, along with 78 new deaths. The updated numbers bring the statewide totals to 9,334 and 337, respectively.

Detroit continues to be a hot spot for the coronavirus in Michigan, with more than 2,400 cases reported in the city. Wayne and Oakland counties have reported 1,998 and 1,910 cases, respectively.

Macomb County, which reported on Wednesday that an inmate at the county jail in Mt. Clemons had tested positive for the coronavirus, eclipsed the 1,000 mark in cases.

As the number of those confirmed to have the coronavirus increased with Wednesday's update, the death totals increased as well.

Michigan's death total reached 337 Wednesday, up from 259 on Tuesday. Oakland County has reported the most deaths for any one community in Michigan with 99 as of 10 a.m. Wednesday. Detroit (83) and Wayne County (63) are close behind.

The average age among the 337 who have died due to the coronavirus is a little more than 71 years old. Of those who have tested positive, the majority of them (20 percent) are between the ages of 50-59.
