A Markham, Illinois, man was airlifted to Chicago with serious injuries after a crash on Interstate 80/94 Monday morning, Indiana State Police said.

Dominique Bernard Ellis, 26, was driving eastbound just past the Calumet Avenue exit when he failed to slow down enough for stalled traffic, swerved to the right, striking the side of a semi trailer, police said.

The force caused the semi trailer to rock side-to-side. Ellis’ black Nissan appeared to be crushed. The roof was pushed down into him, police said. He was extracted by the Hammond Fire Department and airlifted to the University of Chicago, the release stated.

Both directions of I-80/94 were shut down for the university helicopter to land, police said.

The crash happened around 9:30 a.m., police said. The highway reopened by 11:35 a.m. The semi driver was not injured.
