CNU senior Pokorny, from Lafayette High, named Academic All-American first-teamer for second year in a row

COLLEGES

Women’s soccer:

Christopher Newport senior Carson Pokorny was named a first-team Academic All-American for the second straight year by the College Sports Information Directors of America. A second-team pick in 2017, the Lafayette High graduate became the first Captain in any sport to gain such an honor three times.

The Capital Athletic Conference women’s soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year has a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and is working toward a degree in biochemistry, and she had 20 goals and 32 assists in four seasons, placing eighth all-time on CNU’s list with 72 points. She intends to attend medical school with career aspirations to become a doctor.

Junior forward Riley Cook became the first CNU women’s soccer player ever to make the All-South Atlantic Region team in her first three seasons. The third team included CNU seniors Keiley McCarthy and Sydney Rife, who’s from Kellam High, and sophomore Emily Talotta.

Virginia Wesleyan freshman defender Samantha Crawford was on the first team, and Marlins senior defender Shae Geary made the third team.

Men’s soccer:

CNU senior defender Derek Cook, a Tabb High graduate, made the Division III All-South Region first team, while Captains sophomore forward Will Collins made the second team.

Virginia junior teammates Joe Bell and Henry Kessler, whose team is in the NCAA Elite Eight, were named among 15 semifinalists for the men’s Hermann Trophy, soccer’s Heisman.

The top-seeded Cavaliers face eighth-seeded Southern Methodist in a quarterfinal at 7 p.m. Friday at Klockner Stadium. The winner will head to Cary, North Carolina, for a semifinal Dec. 13.

Football:

Seven Apprentice School players, including five on defense, were named to the All-U.S. Collegiate Athletic Association team after helping the Builders to a 6-4 season.

They were freshman quarterback Mason Tatum, sophomore right tackle Joe Mammano, sophomore linebacker Christian Walker, sophomore linebacker Javon Walker, sophomore defensive back Paul Massey Jr., freshman cornerback Qua’shaun Jackson and senior offensive lineman Rodney Addison.

Men’s basketball:

Apprentice School senior forward Drew Walton was named the USCAA Division I Player of the Week. He had 25 points and 10 rebounds in the Builders’ 82-75 home victory over Blue Lights College of Apex, North Carolina, last week, hitting 9 of 11 free throws.

Christopher Newport fell from 11th to 18th in the latest d3hoops.com poll after Sunday’s loss to Wisconsin-Stevens Point, which broke the Captains’ 22-game home winning streak at Freeman Center.

Randolph-Macon moved up to No. 9. The Yellow Jackets were No. 24 in the preseason poll and No. 12 a week ago in the first regular-season poll.

R-MC improved to 7-0 overall and 2-0 in the ODAC with its 81-48 victory at Randolph on Sunday.

Women’s basketball:

Norfolk State redshirt senior Chanette Hicks was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Player of the Week and the Defensive Player of the Week.

Hicks, a dynamic 5-foot-6 former Maury High and Virginia Tech player, averaged 22.5 points, 8.5 steals, 4.0 rebounds and 2.5 assists per game for the Spartans as they won both of their games in the Jacksonville University Classic, shooting a combined 17 for 39 (.436) from the floor and 10 for 13 (.769) from the free-throw line.

Wrestling:

Virginia Tech moved to No. 5 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll and is the highest-ranked Atlantic Coast Conference team.

N.C. State is sixth, Pittsburgh 10th, North Carolina 18th and Virginia 24th.

Iowa, Nebraska, Penn State and Arizona State are ranked 1-4.

Field hockey:

CNU’s Abby Asuncion and Rachel Cooke made the Division III All-South Region first team, while fellow Captains Courtney Fiest and Bailey Miller were on the second team. Mary Washington’s Lauren Hopkins, a senior from Kempsville High, also made the second team.

PRO BASKETBALL

Former Old Dominion standout 6-9 player Frank Hassell, 31, had 28 points and 11 rebounds for Le Portel in its 94-69 loss to Lyon-Villeurbanne in the top French league.

According to eurobasket.com, Hassell is averaging 16.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and an assist per game this season, playing 28.4 minutes per contest. In his first eight games, he was shooting 57% (57 of 100) from the field and 50% (8 of 16) on free throws.

ODU product Jennie Simms is playing a key role for a 4-6 Al-Qazeres team in Spain’s top women’s league.

According to eurobasket.com, the 25-year-old is averaging 13.8 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game for Al-Qazeres, which shares eighth place in a 14-team league.

In her first eight games, she was shooting 46.8% from the field (36 of 77) and 77.4% (24 of 31) from the free-throw line.
