PREP ROUNDUP: Lakeland handles Sandpoint, falls short to Nampa

RATHDRUM — Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute knew going into its dual with Nampa that it was key for his guys at the upper weights to take care of business when called on.

And it was pretty close to happening.

Jacob Lafollette (195 pounds) and Sam Feusier (285) earned pins, giving the Hawks a 39-29 lead with Hayden Berger’s decision at 220. But Nampa closed the night with two pins at 98 and 106 to steal the dual 41-39 on Thursday at Lakeland High.

“We knew they had some studs at the younger weights, so we moved Hayden to 220,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “He’s been tough all year, and was tough again tonight and very nearly got that pin we needed. Had he won that, we would have taken the dual. But Nampa has those guys, and they were nails tonight. It’s tough, but that’s wrestling.”

Earlier, Lakeland had eight pins to beat Sandpoint 64-8.

“We had a lot of guys that were wrestling the full six minutes,” Edelblute said. “We had some upsets and guys that fought the entire match and got the job done.”

Lakeland, Sandpoint and Nampa will compete in the 24th annual River City Duals tournament today at Saturday at Post Falls High. Due to the pandemic, teams from Washington and Montana are unable to participate in the 16-school tournament, which also features teams from McCall-Donnelly and Weiser from southern Idaho. Post Falls has won five of the last six tournament titles.

SANDPOINT — In a game originally scheduled for Dec. 17, the host Bulldogs finished off the sweep of the Tigers in nonleague play at Les Rogers Court.

Arie VanDenBerg hit four 3-pointers and scored 14 points for Sandpoint (3-5), which plays at Lakeland tonight at 7.

It was the first win in three games for Sandpoint under new head coach Mike Roos, who moved up from assistant coach when head coach Wade Engelson, a former Post Falls High assistant, resigned last week.

Hunter Higgins scored a game-high 15 points for Timberlake (3-6), which opens Intermountain League play Saturday at home vs. Priest River.

• POSTPONEMENTS

Thursday's boys basketball game between Kellogg and host St. Maries was postponed, due to school being out at Kellogg because of a power outage.

The game was rescheduled for Feb. 3.
