Marin Catholic’s Sofia Aldridge and Rose Malen shot an 88 and a 92, respectively, on Monday to qualify for next week’s North Coast Section Division I Championship.
Aldridge tied for 11th overall and Malen was tied for 18th at Beau Pre Golf Club in McKinleyville, helping the Wildcats finish second in the team competition with a 392. Cardinal Newman took home the title by shooting a combined 341.
Aldridge and Malen advance to the Division I championship at Foxtail Golf Club in Rohnert Park next Monday. The teams from Terra Linda and Redwood already qualified for the event.
Girls volleyball
Olivia Smith posted a double-double with 11 kills and 10 digs as Tam defeated Drake in an MCAL play-in game, 25-14, 25-14, 25-16 on Monday night.
The victory earns the Red-tailed Hawks (21-10) a date in the semifinals against top-seeded Marin Catholic (26-3). The Wildcats are set to host Tam at 7 p.m. on Wednesday while No. 3 Redwood and No. 2 Branson clash at COM in the other semifinal.
“It’s such a big deal,” Tam coach Ray Karter said of ending Tam’s lengthy MCAL playoff drought. “The seniors’ first year we won one league game. …. The level of volleyball was something where they came in and really wanted to build the program.”
MCAL teams played 14 league games back then as opposed to just eight now and six teams made the playoffs as opposed to just four now.
Caitlin Smith had 19 digs for Tam while Layla Bakhshandeh added eight kills. Ella Bricker and Tate Martinelli both posted six kills and six blocks. Kayli Morris had 11 assists and 10 digs while Sarah Baldwin had three kills and three blocks.
Girls tennis
Kava Taufa picked up a 6-2, 6-2 win at No.1 singles to lift San Rafael to a 4-3 win against Novato (2-13). San Rafael (3-11) swept the three doubles matches en route to the win.
Women’s volleyball
Sophomore outside hitter Tiffany Wong posted a double-double with 12 kills and 10 digs as Dominican University fell in three sets late Sunday night, 25-19, 29-27, 25-20, against Hawaii Hilo. Catherine Johnson added 10 kills for the Penguins (1-16, 1-11 PacWest).
Women’s soccer
Dominican goalie Alyssa Ramos was named the PacWest defender of the week for the second time this season. Ramos nothced her sixth and seventh shutouts of the season last week, making nine saves across 220 scoreless minutes. Ramos pushed her career shutout total to 24 while helping the Penguins to a pair of 0-0 ties.
Men’s soccer
Dominican’s Luke Raley was named the PacWest player of the week after scoring three goals in two games last week. Teammate Eddie Silverbush was named the conference’s defender of the week and also found the back of the net three times.
Marin triathlon
Ross’ Ashley Wood was the first female finisher in the Olympic Triathlon on Sunday, finishing the course in 2 hours, 23 minutes and 8 seconds. San Francisco’s Adam Suczewsk was the first male finisher, clocking in at 2:01.55.
Tennis
Terra Linda High tennis coach Rocky Pierson was named the USTA NorCal adult men’s 5.5 singles player of the year at an awards ceremony at Diablo Country Club on Saturday.
