Mumbai: In an unusual incident, in Mumbai a woman accidentally gave away her gold jewellery worth Rs. 5 lakh to a poor woman along with bread in a plastic bag. The police have recovered the bag.
The woman, working as a domestic help, kept her gold ornaments in the plastic bag in order to mortgage them to repay borrowed by her husband. On her way after work, her employer gave her a loaf of bread that she kept along with the gold ornaments. On the way she gave the bag to a poor woman forgetting that it had the gold ornaments along with the bread, reported The Indian Express.
She then went to Dindoshi police station and narrated the whole incident. The police went through a rollercoaster ride for 24 hours trying to find the bag. The police said that the poor woman whom the woman gave the bread told them that she threw the bag near the dustbin.
The incident took place on Tuesday in Goregaon (East) near the 50-year-old domestic help’s workplace. She was on way to the bank when she came across the poor woman and gave her bag containing bread, completely forgetting that it had the gold ornaments. She realised her mistake when she reached the bank. However, she couldn’t find the poor woman. She contacted the police in the afternoon.
The woman did not inform her husband about the incident but was deeply disturbed due to it. She even thought of harming herself because of her mistake. The police then spoke to her family and reassured them that they will find her jewellery, told assistant police inspector, Suraj Pawar.
The police then inquired with local people and managed to trace the woman whom the victim gave the bag. When the police asked the woman what she did with the bag, she told them that she threw it as her son did not want to eat the bread. Initially the police thought that she could be lying, so they checked for CCTV cameras in the area where she claimed she threw the bag. Fortunately, they found a low-quality camera on the SV Road lane where the bag was thrown.
While analysing the footage, the police found the plastic bag. It was moving, and the police realized that a puppy or a rat was pulling it away. The bag was gone when they reached the spot. The police then spotted a gutter at the spot with an outlet for the water to pass.
They opened the gutter and found the pouch containing the gold ornaments that matched with the description given by the woman. Senior inspector Jeevan Kharat said that they found three gold chains, six fingers rings and a couple of earrings.
The police has not registered a case in the matter.
