Southbury Stolen Car Used In Armed Robbery

Windsor Police have taken a suspect into custody after a gas station armed robbery who allegedly used a stolen car from Southbury.

SOUTHBURY, CT - Police pursued and arrested a suspect who allegedly committed an armed robbery early Thursday morning. The crime took place at Jay’s Mobil, 680 Poquonock Ave., at around 3:30 a.m.

Police identified the suspect as Robert Shepard, Jr., 41, of Coventry. He was charged with first-degree robbery, sixth-degree larceny, interfering with an officer, third-degree larceny, engaging an officer in pursuit, reckless driving and criminal impersonation.

Police spoke with a female clerk at the gas station who stated that a white male entered the store and demanded cash while implying that he was armed. The clerk fought with the suspect who fled the store and got into a tan Toyota Camry with no license plate and fled south on I-91.

A Windsor police officer spotted the car on I-91 southbound and followed it onto I-84 westbound. The car then got off at Asylum Avenue in Hartford.

After a short pursuit, the car overturned and the suspect got out and fled. The officer chased the suspect, catching him, and after a brief struggle was able to get the suspect under control and into custody.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for medical evaluation, then later returned to police custody where he is being interviewed about the robbery and his identity.

The car the suspect drove had been reported stolen Dec. 5 in Southbury. Windsor Police are trying to determine if the suspect was involved in other recent robberies in the ongoing investigation.
