New Delhi: Monsoon rains bring some refreshing respite from the scorching heat. But with the rains come a host of diseases and infections that pose a serious threat to your health and well-being.
Malaria is one such ailment that is serious and can turn fatal if not treated in time. Caused by a parasite that commonly infects female anopheles mosquito, malaria causes high fever, shaking chills, diarrhoea and vomiting, and flu-like sickness. Plasmodium falciparum, P vivax, P ovale, and P malariae are transmitted to humans through mosquito bites that are likely to cause severe repercussions.
According to statistics by the WHO in 2020, globally 241 million clinical cases of malaria occurred, and 627,000 people died, most of them children in Africa. Since many countries with malaria are already among the poorer nations, the disease maintains a vicious cycle of disease and poverty.
However, the good news is that by staying healthy and taking certain precautions, you can ward off malaria easily. Here are a few points to note to avoid the risk:
  1. Always apply insect repellent all over the body. These are easily available in the market and are skin-friendly.
  2. Whenever going outdoors in the evening or night, wear long-sleeved dresses to avoid mosquito bites.
  3. While sleeping, either use a mosquito net or an electric repellent that helps to get rid of mosquitoes.
  4. Anopheles mosquito breeds in water. Hence, make sure there is no collected water near your house. Keep your surroundings clean.
  5. If you have traveled to a country where malaria is common and you develop its symptoms, you need to contact your doctor immediately to get a diagnosis and timely treatment.
