President Joe Biden’s approval rating has dropped to 43%, the lowest figure since he took office 8 months ago, according to a new Gallup poll.

The poll shows for the first time a majority of those polled – 53% - disapprove of Biden’s performance.

Biden’s approval rating remains high among Democrats – 90% - a figure that has not varied by more than 8 points since he took office. Only 6% of Republicans approved of the job Biden is doing, a drop of 1 percentage point from the month before. According to Gallup, Biden’s approval rating has not fallen below 90% among Democrats, nor exceeded 12% among Republicans since he took office.

Biden’s numbers dropped the most among independents, with 37% saying they approve of the job the president is doing. That’s a 6-point drop from August and a 24-point drop from when Biden took office in January.

Biden’s 43% numbers put him ahead of only ex-president Donald Trump for September approval ratings during the first terms of office. Trump posted a 37, compared to 52% for Barack Obama in 2009, 51% for George W. Bush in 2001 and 47% for Bill Clinton in 1993.

Gallup’s poll was conducted Sept. 1-17 and includes a random sampling of 1,000 U.S. adults. It had a margin of error of 4 percentage points. You can see the complete Gallup results here.
