Three Corpus Christi police officers involved in fatal shooting identified, investigation underway

The three officers are on paid administrative leave at this time in accordance with department practice and policy.

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The Corpus Christi Police Department has released the names of 3 officers involved in a fatal shooting over the weekend that left a 66-year-old man dead.

The shooting followed a disturbance Saturday in which the man fired first at the officers.

Officer Jesus Turrubiantes, Officer Jacqueline Deleon, and Officer Adrian Guerra have been placed on paid administrative leave, which is in accordance with current department practice during an investigation like this one.

Police say the officers responded to an early morning disturbance Saturday on the 5300 block of Bonham St. near Carroll High School.

It's where a 66-year old man fired at least one shot at police, causing Officer Turrubiantes to return fire.

He was the only officer to discharge his weapon. Police say the man went back inside of the house, where he was later found dead.

"There was another person in the house she's with us now, nobody else was injured thank god. the officer is fine, we'll work our way through this. As you know our standard protocol the officer will go on administrative leave we'll review our policy our practice our training rules laws and we'll make sure we work through that with the district attorney and our other partners and get through this incident," said Chief Mike Markle.

You might recall this is not the first time Officer Jacqueline Deleon has been part of an officer involved shooting investigation.

The case happened in March of last year when officers Gilbert Cantu and Jacqueline Deleon approached a man by the name of Richard Salazar as they were looking for some robbery suspects on the city's Westside. They say he matched the description and when they asked him to show his hands one officer mistook what ended up being a lighter for a weapon.

Cantu opened fire. Salazar was shot four times.

Both officers were placed on paid administrative leave during the investigation.

Deleon was not the officer who discharged their weapon in that case and returned to work shortly after the incident.

In July of 2019 a grand jury decided to not indict Cantu. However, the city of Corpus Christi later agreed to pay the victim nearly three-million dollars to settle a lawsuit.

Meanwhile, the investigation continues into this latest officer involved shooting.

Officer Jesus Turrubiates has been a police officer with the Corpus Christi Police Department for 2 years.

Officer Jacqueline DeLeon has been a police officer with the Corpus Christi Police Department for 2 years.

Officer Adrian Guerra has been a police officer with the Corpus Christi Police Department for 1 year.

CCPD asks that if you have any information pertaining to this incident, you are encouraged to call the Corpus Christi Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 361-886-2840.
