The Nashville Fire department responded to the scene and said no other injuries were reported.

The shooting was preceded by a physical altercation between the victim and the suspect, who left the mall building and immediately surrendered to police, officials said.

The suspected gunman placed a pistol on a counter and told officers he acted in self defense, police spokesman Don Aaron told the Tennesseean.

He was later taken to a Metro Nashville police department facility to be interviewed.

Police swept through the mall after the shooting and determined there was no additional imminent threat.

The nearby Grand Ole Opry house and Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center were placed on lockdown following reports of the shooting.
