Live blog: Combined COVID-19 deaths in KS, MO top 700 people

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The novel coronavirus, or COVID-19, continues to spread across the world, and in Missouri and Kansas.

41 Action News is keeping track of all closings and cancellations, as well as tracking where positive coronavirus cases are located.

We are also keeping track of which metro jurisdictions are under stay at home orders for the foreseeable future, only allowing for essential business and activities.

Updates on the spread of the virus and how it is affecting the metro can be found below for May 12.

7:45 p.m. | Thirty more inmates at Lansing Correctional Facility have tested positive for COVID-19.

5:49 p.m. | Wahlburgers, Hy-Vee and Cresent Capital will donate 2,000 meals Thursday and Friday to health0care workers in the Kansas City area. The Olathe Fire Department will deliver meals to seven local hospitals: KU Satellite Indian Creek, KU Medical Center, KU Lenexa, St. Luke’s North, St. Luke’s South, St. Luke’s Hospital of Kansas City and Olathe Medical Center.

5:39 p.m. | Center School District plans to have its graduation July 28 at Starlight Theatre, pending health department guidance at that time. The makeup date in the event of rain is July 29.

The ceremony, which will be streamed live, likely will include a limited number of guests. More information will be available closer to the ceremony.

4:40 p.m. | Those who still are waiting for their stimulus payment from the federal government have until Wednesday to receive the money directly into their bank accounts.

The IRS said direct deposit information will need to be submitted on its website via the agency's "Get My Payment" tool.

3:45 p.m. | A staff member at the Lansing Correctional Facility died Monday from complications related to COVID-19, the Kansas Department of Corrections says.

The man, who was over the age of 60, had more than 30 years of experience working with the KDOC. Most recently, he had been serving as a corrections supervisor.

He is the first staff member to die from the outbreak at the Lansing prison, where more than 750 people have tested positive for the virus.

2:36 p.m. | The number of COVID-19 deaths in Kansas and Missouri has surged past 700, according to updated figures from the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services along with local health departments across the two-state region.

Our updated figures show 10,232 cases and 531 deaths in Missouri with 7,243 cases and 180 deaths in Kansas, including the first reported in Manhattan. There are 4,054 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 166 deaths in the immediate seven-county Kansas City area.

2:15 p.m. | House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has unveiled a more than $3 trillion new coronavirus aid package. A House vote is expected Friday, though Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell says there is no “urgency” to act immediately.

12:45 p.m. | Kansas City, Missouri, Councilman Brandon Ellington will hold another food drive in partnership with Kingdom Word Ministries on Wednesday. The food drive will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at Kingdom Word Ministries, 3301 Cypress Ave.

Noon | More than 6,000 University of Missouri students will graduate in a virtual ceremony this weekend. All May graduates will be invited back to campus for in-person commencement ceremonies at a later date.

11:40 a.m. | The Kansas City Streetcar will begin to add service and hours as downtown businesses gradually reopen. Beginning Monday, May 18, the KC Streetcar will follow this schedule:

  • Monday-Friday: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m., two streetcars all day with a third streetcar added from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Saturday: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., two streetcars all day with a third streetcar added from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
  • Sunday: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m., two streetcars all day.

The Phase 1 plan slightly expands streetcar operation and on-route availability. COVID-19 cleaning procedures, including midday streetcar cleaning, will continue.

11:30 a.m. | The Kansas Department of Labor went live Tuesday morning with a new application process for the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance program (PUA). Several Kansans told 41 Action News they experienced issues accessing the site Tuesday morning. The state of Kansas has battled with technical issues related to unemployment claims since they began to skyrocket in March.

11 a.m. | Eight additional district courts in Kansas will begin issuing marriage licenses on Wednesday, including Leavenworth and Miami district courts. Applicants must call to begin the process, which does not require in-person contact. Ten district courts have already been issuing marriage licenses since April 20. For more information, click here.

10:30 a.m. | The Kansas Department of Labor says back payments for the Federal Pandemic Unemployment Compensation $600 additional benefit began paying out on May 6. The dollar amounts are too high to pay everyone at once when combined with weekly benefits. According to KDOL, payments should be received over the coming days, and retroactive payments for those who have returned to work will be "pushed out as the pay cap allows, over the coming days."

10:25 a.m. | The University of Missouri will offer a new online class this summer called "Interdisciplinary perspectives on COVID-19: The effect of epidemics on our health and social worlds." The eight-week course will be open to all MU and University of Missouri System students. It will be taught by faculty from all of MU’s academic schools and colleges and will focus on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on a variety of sectors.

10:15 a.m. | The Kansas Department of Revenue has begun to reopen some driver's license offices in the state. In the Kansas City metro, commercial driver's license services have resumed at the office in Edgerton. All other DMV offices and services in the metro remain closed.

9:46 a.m. | The Center School District announced plans to hold graduation on July 28 at Starlight Theatre, pending health guidelines.

9:19 a.m. | WaterOne shared advice to make sure businesses that are reopening have clean and fresh water in their pipes.

8:56 a.m. | University of Kansas Health System officials gave their daily COVID-19 update.

8:30 a.m. | Swope Health will hold COVID-19 testing at the Kansas City Public Library Southwest Branch on Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

6:35 a.m. | Dr. Anthony Fauci is expected to issue a warning to America about the dangers of lifting restrictions on non-essential businesses amid the coronavirus pandemic.

5:48 a.m. | Jackson County Sheriff Darryl Forte said three inmates at the Jackson County Detention Center are in isolation for positive COVID-19 tests and another seven are in precautionary quarantine because of potential contact.

5:30 a.m. | As some countries wind down stay at home orders, the World Health Organization said on Monday that attempting herd immunity without a vaccine is a “dangerous” idea.

5 a.m. | Johnson County Child Care licensing will hold a Zoom meeting at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday to give an overview of how childcare will be affected by the reopening plan.
