BEMIDJI -- The Bemidji High School girls tennis team is still undefeated. Savannah Haugen made sure of that.

In the middle match of the Lumberjacks’ home quadrangular against Detroit Lakes, Staples-Motley and East Grand Forks on Tuesday, Haugen won a third-set tiebreaker 11-9 over Lauren Ruten to clinch the deciding No. 1 singles matchup 7-6, 7-6.

“Haugen played the hero at the end of the Staples match,” BHS head coach Kyle Fodness said. “… She decided, no matter the result, she was going to play her game and stay aggressive. Anyone watching could see tremendous mental toughness from her, as she absolutely teed off on her last few shots to seal it with everyone watching her match. Tough thing to do under pressure.”

In all, Bemidji beat DL 5-2, Staples-Motley 4-3 and EGF 4-3 to improve to 9-0 on the year.

Haugen went 3-0 on the day at the top singles spot, also beating Brina Smith of Detroit Lakes 7-6, 7-6 and Maggie Dietrich of East Grand Forks 6-4, 6-2.

The BHS doubles tandems also saw success across the board, going 8-1 in total on the day.

Nettie Kimble, Hannah Nelson and Kylen Fenson all went 3-0 in their matches. Kimble split time between first and second doubles, while Nelson anchored second doubles and Fenson third doubles. Paige Anderson was also undefeated at 2-0 as Fenson’s partner against Staples-Motley and EGF.

Nelson and Kimble teamed up at No. 2 doubles against the Green Wave, winning 7-5, 7-5 over Kendal Rand and Kate Johnson to secure the team win, as well.

The Lumberjacks will return to action at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, for the Hibbing Invitational.
