Choppers Spotted Along Schuylkill Are Checking Power Lines: PECO

Neighbors around Royersford and Phoenixville have reported helicopters flying very low in the area this week. What's up?

ROYERSFORD, PA — Reports of helicopters flying around Royersford and Phoenixville along the Schuylkill River have been steady on social media this week.

Many surmised these were inspecting power lines. Patch contacted PECO to see if the choppers were theirs and if they were doing inspections for PECO.

The company said on Thursday that PECO Overhead Transmission is doing their yearly comprehensive helicopter inspection on the transmission system.

Asked specifically if the company was doing line inspections in Chester and Montgomery counties, where readers have reported sightings, the company initially gave a more general response.

"We complete regular inspections of our electric transmission lines as part of our ongoing maintenance and inspection programs. Helicopters and drones are used to complete visual inspections of electrical equipment to identify maintenance work that may be needed," PECO said.

On Friday morning, PECO confirmed that PECO had been inspecting lines by helicopter along the Schuylkill River. "These inspections are taking place all across the PECO service territory," a company spokesperson told Patch.

PECO is Pennsylvania's largest electric and natural gas utility and is an Exelon company.
