A 4-year-old girl died after she was was swept out to sea by a crashing wave in West Marin, authorities said Friday.

The incident was reported around 4 p.m. Thursday at McClures Beach in the Point Reyes National Seashore, where a large autumn swell was producing waves 8- to 12-feet high, according to the Marin County Fire Department.

The girl’s father jumped in the water in an attempt to rescue her, but he was unsuccessful.

“She was in the water for an extended period of time and then she came ashore, where National Park Service rangers immediately administered CPR,” said Marin County fire Battalion Chief Graham Groneman.

A California Highway Patrol helicopter took the girl to UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital in Oakland, where she was pronounced dead, Groneman said.

The girl’s father was transported by helicopter to Petaluma Valley Hospital, where he was treated for hypothermia, authorities said.
