“We have not seen any of the decline that the CDC and the local doctors tell us is necessary to loosen the standards on activities that will keep you, your family and our community safe,” Jenkins said.

Of coronavirus patients in Dallas County who have been hospitalized and reported their employment, more than 80% have been critical infrastructure workers, which the county defines as people who work in fields such as health care, transportation, food and agriculture, public works, finance, communications, clergy, first responders and other essential jobs.

About two-thirds of Dallas County coronavirus patients who have been hospitalized are under 65, and half have a high-risk chronic health condition.

Jenkins urged people to continue to avoid crowds, wear a face covering in public and use social distancing.

Jenkins said “to the extent possible,” people who attend protests, rallies or other large gatherings — like the ones that have taken place across the country, protesting police killings of black Americans — should attempt to maintain six feet of space between other people and wear a cloth face covering.

“We must move towards a more just society where policing practices are radically improved and violence against black residents is dramatically decreased,” he said, adding that violent “interlopers” prevent progress toward that goal.
