A young Alabama girl was found alive in a wooded area after she’d been missing for two days.
Volunteer searchers found 4-year-old Evelyn “Vadie” Sides in good condition and with her dog late Friday afternoon while combing the woods following her disappearance Wednesday afternoon, AL.com reports.
“The dog was with her protecting her the whole time,” Lee County Sheriff’s Office spokesman Andrew Peacock told the outlet.
Vadie was walking her dog with her caretaker — a woman in her 70s who also watches the little girl’s baby sister — when she went missing from Auburn-area Loachapoka. The dog ran off again after Vadie was found but is expected to return home.
Law enforcement officers came out in the hundreds to search a relatively isolated wooded area from Wednesday through Friday, when they allowed volunteers to join in the effort.
The young girl was found within hours of volunteers coming on board and within a mere mile from her home.
“I’m so happy and grateful to God for watching over my beautiful granddaughter and bringing her safely back to us,” grandmother Harriet Sides told the outlet.
