Thomas Gibbons Spotlight Games to Watch

Please welcome aboard Thomas Gibbons. Gibbons, who is currently a college student and volunteer assistant high school football coach will also be a contributor here this season.

Oak Park-River Forest Huskies (0-0) vs Simeon Wolverines

Friday, August 25th at 7p.m.

OPRF: The Huskies look to be one of the top teams in the West Suburban Silver again this season. With 5 total returning starters, they will travel to Simeon for their first big test right out of the gate. Running back Terrance Roundy is back for his senior season and his raw speed and athleticism will give the Wolverines defense problems. And Fordam commit OL Phil Saleh will look to lead the offensive line to give Roundy plenty of running lanes.

OPRF Players to watch: #6 RB Terrance Roundy, #1 MLB Cederick Cheatham, and newcomer #77 DE Izaiah Ruffin

Simeon: The Wolverines finished 5-4 last year and were bounced out of the first round of the IHSA state playoffs. And the one score loss to OPRF last season (21-14) is probably still in the back of their minds. But the Wolverines are loaded with talent on both sides of the ball. WR Jayshon Jackson, a three star athlete committed to Cincinnati, will be a key to a Wolverines victory. His breakout speed and suburb route running makes him a dangerous threat every time he lines up. The Huskies will have to contain him to have a chance to shut down the Wolverines efficient offense.

Players to watch: #1 WR Jayson Jackson, #57 DE Tierre Turner ( Indiana St. commit), and #3 junior QB Alante Brown (early offers from NIU and Toledo).

Thomas Gibbons Prediction: Simeon 35-OPRF 31. Jayson Jackson proves to be too much for the OPRF secondary and scores three times in the season opener.

Brother Rice Crusaders (0-0) vs Marist (0-0)

Friday, Aug 25th at 7:30p.m.

The Crusaders and the RedHawks square off again to start the 2017 season. Last season, Brother Rice ran away with the win, 31-7 win at Soldier Field.

Brother Rice: The Crusaders lost to Fremd in the first round of the playoffs last year, look to make a name for themselves right from the start. Head coach Brian Badke will be entering his 7th season as the man in charge and will look to dominate the Catholic League Blue division.

Players to Watch: #77 T Nick Marozas, #5 DB Arthur Veal

Marist: The Redhawks finished the regular season 8-1 before losing to New Trier in the first round of the playoffs, brings back a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. West Virginia commit TE TJ Ivy will look to lead the offense to victory Friday night. Also, Longtime assistant coach Ron Dawczak replaces Pat Dunne as the head coach. It will be interesting to see what his game plan entails when the light come on Friday night.

Players to Watch: #2 TE TJ Ivy, #59 Gavin McCabe (Indiana commit) and #52 Elijah Teague (Minnesota commit)

Thomas Gibbons Prediction: Marist 27-Brother Rice 24 in OT

Loyola Academy Ramblers (0-0) vs. Phillips Wildcats (0-0)

Saturday, August 26th at 7:15 p.m.

Loyola Academy: Loyola went all the way to Champaign last year but fell to Maine South in the championship game. But the Ramblers have a strong senior class and are ready for another title run. Tommy Herion has left for Iowa, leaving big shoes to fill at the quarterback position. The Ramblers must have consistent play at QB not just vs Phillips but for the entire season if they want to make it back to the show.

Players to Watch: #1 RB Hammid Bullie, #3 WR Noah Jones, and #40 LB Christopher Scott

Phillips: Phillips had an impressive season last year with some notable wins on their schedule, defeating Simeon at home and a big win vs Herscher in the quarterfinals. Ultimately though, they lost to Johnsburg in the semifinals. With the start of a new season, Phillips is trying to prove they can hang with any team in Illinois. Loyola will be a tough test but Phillips has the athletes to compete with the one of the top teams in 8A every season.

Players to Watch: #2 QB J’bore Gibbs (Eastern Michigan commit), #78 DE Queneil Morrison (NIU commit)

Thomas Gibbons Prediction:: Loyola 45-Phillips 24.
