Man badly hurt in Thanksgiving evening shooting near New Castle

A 21-year-old man was badly hurt after being shot in the Hampton Green Townhouses community near New Castle on Thursday evening, police said.

New Castle County police were called to the 1500 block of Stonebridge Blvd., near Wilton, at about 8:30 p.m. for reports of shots fired.

Officers found a black SUV idling that had recently been reported stolen out of Wilmington.

A 21-year-old man was found shot in an SUV in the Hampton Green Townhouses community Thursday evening, police said.

When detectives looked into the car, they saw a 21-year-old man lying across the front seats. He'd been shot in the upper body, police said.

Officers performed first aid until paramedics arrived and took him to a local hospital. As of Friday morning, he remained in the hospital.

Police said the investigation remains in its early stages. They do not yet have information on who stole the SUV or why the man was shot.

The shooting was the second of Thanksgiving Day. 

Earlier in the afternoon, just after 4 p.m., an 18-year-old man was shot on East Ninth Street in Wilmington. He was in critical condition Thursday, police said. They released no additional information.
