THE LIVEWIRE MOTORCYCLE RIDING EXPERIENCE

The LiveWire model offers an all-new motorcycling experience – accessible to new riders and thrilling for accomplished motorcyclists. The LiveWire motorcycle radically alters many of the sensations that have previously defined motorcycling; the H-D Revelation powertrain delivers extreme power in a seamless rush while the simplicity of operation allows the rider to focus more completely on the real thrill of motorcycling – the dynamic sensations of acceleration and motion.

  • Amazing acceleration: The instant torque provided by the H-D Revelation powertrain delivers exhilarating acceleration from a stop; the LiveWire motorcycle can rush from 0 to 60 mph (0 to 100 kph) in 3.0 seconds and 60 to 80 mph (100 to 129 kph) in 1.9 seconds. Because maximum torque is always on tap, roll-on acceleration for passing from any speed is outstanding.
  • Twist-And-Go: Electric power requires no clutch and no gear shifting, greatly simplifying operation for new riders. All riders will also appreciate the braking effect of the power regeneration mode as it adds charge to the battery, especially in urban traffic that often requires a lot of slow-rolling and stop-and-go riding.
  • Minimal NVH (Noise/Vibration/Harshness): The H-D Revelation electric powertrain produces minimal vibration, very little heat, and minimal noise, all of which enhance rider comfort. When the rider activates the LiveWire motorcycle powertrain, the electric motor will produce a subtle pulsing of torque, a heartbeat sensation designed to let the rider know the bike has come to life and is ready to ride. The pulsing ceases when the motorcycle begins to move, and resumes when the motorcycle comes to a stop. The LiveWire model is designed to produce a mechanical signature Harley-Davidson sound as it accelerates and gains speed; a new sound that represents the smooth, electric power of the LiveWire motorcycle.
  • Ease of Maintenance: The LiveWire motorcycle is convenient to own because many of the routine maintenance items required of a motorcycle powered by an internal combustion engine are eliminated: there’s no engine oil to change, and no spark plugs, air filter or primary drive to service. Electric power also eliminates maintenance issues associated with ethanol-blend gasoline and off-season storage. The LiveWire motorcycle does require inspection or service of some mechanical and consumable items, such as the drive belt tension, gearbox oil, brake fluid and brake pads, and tires, at recommended intervals and pre-ride. The high-voltage battery has a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.
  • Performance and Range Optimized for the Urban Rider: The high-voltage battery provides 146 miles (235 km) of city range or 95 miles (152 km) of combined stop-and-go and highway range as measured using the MIC City and MIC Combined tests** and 98 miles (158 km) using World Motorcycle Test Cycle (WMTC)***. DC Fast Charge (DCFC) technology provides a 0-80 percent of battery charge in 40 minutes or 0-100 percent charge in 60 minutes.
  • Leading in Electrification: Harley-Davidson has committed to lead in the electrification of motorcycling and creation of a strong network of charging stations globally is part of that commitment. Harley-Davidson is focused on providing ample opportunities for riders to charge their motorcycles – at home, at authorized Harley-Davidson dealerships, and at other convenient places. All participating authorized Harley-Davidson dealers selling the LiveWire model will offer a DCFC charging station at their dealership.
  • High-Performance Handling and Control: The LiveWire motorcycle is designed to deliver nimble, agile handling for confident control on urban streets and a thrilling ride on curving backroads.
  • The center of gravity has been optimized to enhance traction, braking, and cornering performance.
  • A lightweight cast aluminum frame is extremely rigid and contributes to the precise, responsive handling that makes the LiveWire model exciting to ride in any situation.
  • Premium high-performance SHOWA®BFRC (Balanced Free Rear Cushion-lite) mono-shock rear suspension is fully adjustable and designed to deliver a comfortable ride and precise handling.
  • Premium SHOWA®SFF-BP® (Separate Function front Fork-Big Piston) front suspension matches the performance and adjustability of the rear shock and delivers exceptional low-speed damping control – ideal for composed control in typical urban riding conditions.
  • Brembo® Monoblock front brake calipers grip dual 300 mm-diameter rotors and deliver outstanding power with a crisp feel for confident braking performance.
  • Premium co-branded H-D®/Michelin®Scorcher Sport tires (180mm rear and 120mm front widths) are designed specifically to enhance the handling performance of the LiveWire model.

LIVEWIRE MOTORCYCLE TECHNOLOGY

The LiveWire motorcycle is equipped with a full suite of electronic rider aids and interfaces for a completely connected experience. (See a separate release for more LiveWire Technology details)

  • The Reflex Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS) utilize Cornering Enhanced Anti-lock Braking System (C-ABS), Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS) and Drag-Torque Slip Control System (DSCS) to give the rider more confidence and control in less-than-ideal situations.
  • A 4.3-inch color TFT touchscreen (thin-film-transistor, a type of liquid-crystal display noted for high image quality and contrast) located above the handlebar offers the rider a wide range of information on a display that’s bright and easy to read.
  • Seven selectable Ride Modes electronically control the performance characteristics of the motorcycle and the level of RDRS intervention.
  • A Daymaker®LED headlamp cleanly illuminates the road with brilliant light. LED signal, brake and tail lamps are bright and conspicuous in traffic.
  • H-DConnect service technology provides cellular connectivity that can link a LiveWire owner with their motorcycle through their smart phone using the latest version of the Harley-Davidson™ App.

LIVEWIRE MOTORCYCLE STYLING/DESIGN

The LiveWire model creates a design foundation for coming Harley-Davidson electric vehicles that projects authentic Harley-Davidson styling.

  • The LiveWire follows a key Harley-Davidson styling dictum: the focus is on the motor. Just as the engine is the most eye-catching element – the crown jewel – of every previous Harley-Davidson motorcycle, the H-D Revelation electric motor is the first-look focus of the LiveWire motorcycle. Its bright case and mechanical, muscular shape is meant to convey the power it contains.
  • The cast-aluminum case for the high-voltage battery has been deliberately, highly styled with functional cooling fins that suggest the attractive, repetitive horizontal cooling fins on an air-cooled engine.
  • The rear fender hugs and moves with the wheel so that it almost disappears from sight. This permits the high, wasp-like contour of the tail section below the seat.
  • A paint treatment was selected to reflect the advanced technology of the LiveWire motorcycle. The tone of this paint finish gives it the look of anodized metal and is available in two exclusive colors: Yellow Fuse, and Orange Fuse. The LiveWire model is also available in Vivid Black.
  • A selection of new accessories specific to the LiveWire motorcycle will available at launch, including a two-up seat and tail section, a speed screen blade, decorative trim, hand and foot controls and a motorcycle cover with a charging cord port. Many existing Harley-Davidson®Genuine Motor Parts & Accessories, including hand and foot controls, mirrors and Spectra Glo decorative lighting, may also be used to customize the LiveWire model.

HARLEY-DAVIDSON LIVEWIRE EQUIPPED WITH RIDE-ENHANCING TECHNOLOGY

The Harley-Davidson® LiveWire motorcycle is equipped with a full suite of electronic rider aids and interfaces designed to allow the owner to create a personalized and fully connected riding experience. Those features include the following:

H-D™ CONNECT CELLULAR CONNECTIVITY

The LiveWire motorcycle is equipped with H-D Connect service technology that provides cellular connectivity that can link a LiveWire owner with their motorcycle through their smart phone using the latest version of the free Harley-Davidson App. The H-D App is available in the iOS and Android app stores and core functions (turn-by-turn directions, ride planning, dealer and event locations) of the app are included with the free download. H-D Connect transmits key vehicle health information through the H-D App and provides the owner with the reassurance of being able to remotely monitor their motorcycle’s security, including tamper alerts on the H-D App and stolen-vehicle assistance.

H-D Connect utilizes a cellular telematics control unit (TCU) that functions as an LTE-enabled modem connecting LiveWire motorcycles to the cloud. The H-D Connect service will be offered for a one-year free trial period after the purchase of a new LiveWire motorcycle and available with a subscription charge following the initial free period. H-D Connect will be available beginning in Fall 2019 in the United States, Canada, Puerto Rico and most EU countries. In late August 2020, service will be available in Australia, Brazil, Mexico and Japan. Subscription details can be found on H-D.com/connect.

Motorcycle status: With H-D Connect and the H-D App, the LiveWire motorcycle owner will be able to check key vehicle health information on the H-D App at any time and from any location where sufficient cellular signal is available. Information available through H-D Connect includes high-voltage battery charge status, available range and 12-volt battery charge status. For example, as the LiveWire motorcycle is charging, the owner can check the charge status, including charge level and time to completion, without having to be near the motorcycle.

Tamper alerts and stolen vehicle tracking service: To ensure that an owner’s bike is safe and secure, H-D connect indicates the location of the parked motorcycle on a map in the Harley-Davidson App at any time and in any location where sufficient cellular signal is available. H-D Connect will send an alert to the owner’s phone if the security system is activated because the motorcycle has been bumped or is being tampered with. Another alert will be sent to the owner’s phone if the motorcycle is moved out of the geo-fenced area, and GPS-enabled stolen-vehicle tracking provides peace of mind should the owner need to locate their motorcycle.

Service reminders and notifications: Automated reminders about upcoming vehicle service requirements and other vehicle care notifications will be provided to the rider through the H-D App, which will also offer a Charge Station Location Finder.

COLOR TOUCHSCREEN

A 4.3-inch color TFT touchscreen (thin-film-transistor, a type of liquid-crystal display noted for high image quality and contrast) located above the handlebar offers the rider a wide range of information on a display that’s bright and easy to read. The display unit is tilt-adjustable to afford most riders an optimal viewing angle and the screen brightness adjusts automatically. The touchscreen only functions when the motorcycle is not moving but many of the display options can be changed using the hand control joysticks while riding.

  • A speedometer, range and high-voltage battery status (percent remaining) are always displayed, as required by motor vehicle regulations.
  • The screen display can be customized with several rider-selectable “widgets.” Some include:
    • A power meter that indicates how much of the available power is being used as the motorcycle is being ridden
    • Ride Mode indicator (displays which mode is active)
    • Charging status (showing time remaining to full charge)
    • Alert information keyed to the tell-tale warning lights (turn signals, ABS active, Traction Control active, Check Engine/Battery Overheat, etc.)
    • Active Bluetooth®connection and available functions
  • The LiveWire motorcycle offers Bluetooth®connectivity for use with a smartphone and a wireless headset through the touchscreen. The rider can listen to music files stored on the smartphone, accept incoming calls, and hear turn-by-turn navigation instructions provided by the Harley-Davidson App. Music file and incoming call information is displayed on the screen. The rider can control music and phone functions with the joystick hand controls.
  • Tell-tale lights or indicators are located on each side of the display frame: Turn signals, high/low beam headlamp, ABS active, traction control active, fault warning.

REFLEX™ DEFENSIVE RIDER SYSTEMS

The LiveWire model is equipped with Reflex Defensive Rider Systems (RDRS), a collection of technology designed to match motorcycle performance to available traction during acceleration, deceleration and braking. The systems are designed to aid the rider in controlling the vehicle while accelerating and braking in a straight line or while in a turn. A rider may find the systems most helpful when riding in adverse road conditions and in urgent situations. The systems are electronic and utilize the latest chassis control, electronic brake control and powertrain technology.

Disclaimer: Available traction is determined by the road/tire interface. The systems bundled into the RDRS are only able to adjust brake pressure or powertrain torque in an attempt to keep the forces at the tire from exceeding available grip. These technologies do not have the ability to increase grip, or to intervene when the rider has not made a brake or throttle application (e.g. coasting through a corner with the clutch disengaged). RDRS is not a system to directly influence vehicle direction. This is a key difference between motorcycle RDRS and Automotive Stability Control. The rider is ultimately responsible for steering and path corrections.

Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS)
ABS is designed to prevent the wheels from locking under braking and helps the rider maintain control when braking in a straight-line, urgent situation. ABS operates independently on front and rear brakes to keep the wheels rolling and prevent uncontrolled wheel lock. Cornering Enhanced Antilock Braking System (C-ABS) is a variant of ABS that takes into consideration the lean angle of the motorcycle. The brake pressure required to limit wheel slip when cornering is typically lower than the pressure required under straight line operation. Rear-wheel Lift Mitigation utilizes the C-ABS sensors and the six-axis inertial measurement unit (IMU) to manage rear-wheel lift during heavy braking and further balance deceleration and rider control.

Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS)
Traction control is designed to keep the rear wheel from “spinning out” when the motorcycle is accelerating, and enhances rider control and confidence, especially in wet weather. The Cornering Enhanced Traction Control System (C-TCS) is designed to prevent the rear wheel from excessive spinning under acceleration when going straight or cornering. C-TCS can improve rider confidence when available traction is compromised by wet weather, a sudden unanticipated change in the surface, or when riding on an unpaved road. The action of C-TCS is also tailored when cornering based on lean angle. Each pre-programed ride mode has a specific level of C-TCS. In the customizable ride modes, the rider can select from three levels of C-TCS intervention. With the exception of Rain mode, the rider can deactivate C-TCS when stopped. C-TCS can be re-activated with the push of a button on the left-hand control when the motorcycle is stopped or underway.

C-TCS is also designed to support Front-Wheel Lift Mitigation to reduce the height and duration of front-wheel lift (wheelie). The height and duration of front-wheel lift is tied to the rider-selected C-TCS mode, with Rain being the most-restrictive and Sport being the least-restrictive. Front-Wheel Lift Mitigation is turned off when C-TCS is turned off.

Drag-Torque Slip Control System (DSCS)
Drag-Torque Slip Control (DSCS) is designed to manage rear-wheel slip and prevent rear-wheel lock due to regenerative braking, which typically occurs when the rider decelerates on wet or slippery road surfaces. DSCS functions at speeds over 10 mph (about 17 kph) and works in concert with the ABS system to balance motorcycle deceleration and rider control. DSCS is integral to rear wheel ABS performance.

RIDE MODES

The LiveWire model offers seven selectable Ride Modes that electronically control the performance characteristics of the motorcycle and the level of electronic intervention. Four of the modes are pre-programmed and three are customizable by the owner. Each Ride Mode consists of a specific combination of power (which dictates the maximum rate of acceleration), regeneration (felt as a braking effect when off-throttle), throttle response, and traction control settings.

The rider uses the MODE button on the right-hand controller to change the active ride mode, and the active mode may be displayed as a widget symbol on the color touchscreen. The rider can change ride modes at any time, while riding the motorcycle or when stopped.

  • Sport Mode:Delivers the full performance potential of the motorcycle in a direct and precise manner, with full power and the quickest throttle response on tap. Traction control is set to its lowest level of intervention, and regeneration offers a significant off-throttle braking effect. Sport Mode maximizes the rider connection to the motorcycle for a direct and visceral performance riding experience.
  • Road Mode:Delivers balanced performance with an intuitive blend of technology for daily use, with Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) and Traction Control System (TCS) intervention that offers peace of mind. In Road Mode, the LiveWire motorcycle response will feel more similar to an ICE-powered (Internal Combustion Engine) motorcycle.
  • Range Mode:Offers a blend of settings that results in smooth and judicious response to throttle input with a high level of regeneration to get the most riding distance out of a battery charge.
  • Rain Mode:This mode offers restrained acceleration and limited regeneration with higher levels of electronic intervention to give the rider greater confidence when riding in the rain or when traction is otherwise limited. The Rain Mode is also an appropriate setting for riders to use as they become familiar with an electric motorcycle, and to build riding confidence.Note: The rider may choose to turn off the Traction Control System (TCS) when the motorcycle is stopped. When TCS is turned off, it will not be active in Sport, Road or Range Mode. TCS is a default in Rain Mode, however, and will be active whenever Rain Mode is selected. Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) is always active and may not be turned off by the rider.
  • Custom Modes:With the motorcycle off, the rider can create up to three Custom Modes, displayed as A, B and C on the touchscreen mode widget. Custom Modes allow the rider to select their own combined preference of Power, Regeneration, Throttle Response and Traction Control levels within specific ranges. Power, Regeneration and Throttle Response can be adjusted from 0 to 100 percent in 1 percent increments, and Traction Control can be set to Low, Medium or High intervention. So, for example, the rider could create a mode with 100 percent power and throttle response (as is pre-programmed Sport Mode) but with a lower level of Regeneration than is offered in the pre-programmed Sport Mode. The rider can create a Custom Mode tailored to personal preference or for use in special circumstances, such as track days.

H-D REVELATION ELECTRIC POWERTRAIN SIGNALS A NEW ERA OF HARLEY-DAVIDSON PERFORMANCE

The Harley-Davidson® LiveWire motorcycle features an all-new, all-electric powertrain utilizing contemporary motor and energy-storage technology.

THE H-D REVELATION™ ELECTRIC MOTOR

The LiveWire motorcycle is powered by the all-new H-D Revelation™ permanent-magnet electric motor rated at 105 horsepower (78 kW) and producing 86 ft. lbs. of torque. Unlike an internal combustion engine (ICE), the H-D Revelation can produce 100 percent of its rated torque the instant the throttle is twisted, and 100 percent of that torque is always available, resulting in incredible, seamless acceleration for an exhilarating ride. The LiveWire can accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3.0 seconds, and 60-80 mph in 1.9 seconds. And the high-voltage battery provides 146 miles (235 km) of city range or 95 miles (152 km) of combined stop-and-go and highway range as measured using the MIC City and MIC Combined tests**

The H-D Revelation motor is cooled by a water jacket, with coolant circulated through a small radiator, and is positioned longitudinally and low in the chassis to lower the motorcycle’s center of gravity, and aid maneuverability.

Because there is no traditional transmission, and no clutch; riding the LiveWire motorcycle is an accessible and thrilling “twist-and-go” proposition. A gearset is required to turn the output 90 degrees to align the drive belt sprocket with the rear wheel which contributes to LiveWire’s distinctive sound. The motor output shaft mates to a gearbox containing a 9.71:1 gear reduction running in an oil bath. A final-drive belt transfers power from the gearbox output pulley to the rear wheel, with a 3:1 ratio between the output pulley and the wheel pulley. The gearset is designed to produce a signature Harley-Davidson sound as the LiveWire motorcycle accelerates and gains speed; a new sound that represents the smooth, electric power of the LiveWire motorcycle.

LIVEWIRE MOTORCYCLE POWER STORAGE

The LiveWire motorcycle is powered by a 15.5kWh high-voltage battery (or RESS; Rechargeable Energy Storage System) composed of lithium-ion cells, positioned in the center of the motorcycle and surrounded by the motorcycle’s cast-aluminum frame. The RESS is enclosed in a cast-aluminum housing which also acts as a heat-sink to help cool the cells. The sides of the RESS housing are finned and exposed to the air and are visible within the motorcycle frame. Small air scoops on the motorcycle bodywork duct cooling air to the upper portion of the RESS housing. The RESS housing is attached to the frame at several points and contributes to the over-all rigidity of the chassis. The LiveWire motorcycle is also equipped with a 12-volt lithium-ion accessory battery that provides power for start-up and key fob recognition.

Power regeneration is accomplished through the drivetrain when the LiveWire motorcycle is coasting “off-throttle,” as the motor becomes a generator putting charge back into the RESS. The rider will feel the regeneration process as an engine-braking effect. The level of regeneration is programmed as an element of each of the four Ride Modes, and the regeneration setting can also be adjusted by the rider as an element of multiple custom Ride Modes.

The RESS has a five-year, unlimited-mileage warranty.

LIVEWIRE MOTORCYCLE CHARGING OPTIONS

The LiveWire motorcycle is equipped with an on-board Level 1 charger that plugs into a standard 120-volt (or 240-volt) household outlet with a special power cord that stores below the motorcycle seat. Level 1 RPH (range per hour) of charging time is 13 miles for each hour of charging; and the LiveWire motorcycle will get a full charge overnight with Level 1 charging.

The latest in DC Fast Charge (DCFC) technology is standard on the LiveWire, and may be used to charge the motorcycle through a SAE J1772 connector (or CCS2 – IEC type 2 charging connector in European and some other international markets). DC Fast Charge RPH (range per hour) of charging time is 192 miles for each hour of charging. That is 0-80 percent DC Fast Charge in 40 minutes. 0-100 percent DC Fast Charge in 60 minutes.

The LiveWire motorcycle may be charged with a Level 2 charging station, but it will charge at the Level 1 rate. The charging port is located below a cap in the bodywork forward of the motorcycle seat.

All participating authorized Harley-Davidson dealers selling the LiveWire model will offer a public DCFC charging station at their dealership. U.S. LiveWire customers will receive free charging on ChargePoint stations at participating LiveWire dealers for the first two years. Additionally, Harley-Davidson will provide U.S. LiveWire owners with 500 kWh of free charging service at Electrify America DCFC charging stations.

**Riding range estimates provided following SAE J2982 Riding Range Test Procedure and are based on expected performance of a fully-charged battery when operated under specified conditions.  Actual range will vary depending on riding habits, ambient weather and equipment conditions.
