Hurricane Delta's path has shifted westward, and that means more rain than previously predicted for the Memphis area.

Delta, the strongest Greek alphabet named Atlantic hurricane on record, is currently gaining strength over the Gulf of Mexico. It is forecasted to make landfall along the Louisiana coastline Friday afternoon as a Category 2 hurricane.

NWS Memphis meteorologist Sheana Walsh said the Memphis area can expect to see rains and gusty winds starting Friday. Higher amounts of precipitation are expected for Northern Mississippi.

Friday kicks off with a 50% chance of rain in Memphis, with a high of 67 degrees. Between half an inch to three-quarters of an inch of rain is possible.

By Saturday, the chances of rain and showers increases to 70%, with one to two inches of possible rain accumulation. Daytime temperatures are expected to be in the 70s. A windy day is forecasted for the area, with wind gusts up to 30 mph, mostly in the afternoon.

By mid-day Sunday, Walsh said, most of the remnants of Delta "will clear out".
