MARYLAND — For the 20th consecutive day, the Maryland Department of Health reports more than 1,000 new coronavirus cases have been added to the state's tally.

With the addition of 1,667 new cases Tuesday, Maryland is reporting 185,464 positive test results since the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic.

As cases continue to climb, hospitalizations have increased and deaths are seeing an uptick.

On Tuesday, the Maryland Department of Health reported 65 additional people have been hospitalized with the virus since Monday's report.

The increase in hospital patients comes the day after Gov. Larry Hogan reported hospitals were at capacity in western Maryland and 29 hospitals around the state were over 90 percent capacity, too.

The state has taken measures in the past week to alleviate the strain on the health care system, such as restricting visitation and encouraging providers to delay most elective procedures.

On Monday, Hogan announced the creation of a new Maryland State Police unit to educate people about compliance with health guidelines and provide assistance with enforcement of coronavirus restrictions.

"Following the public health directives is the only way we will be able to stop this virus, keep Maryland open for business, and keep hospitals from overflowing," Hogan said.

Of the 1,341 total coronavirus patients hospitalized Tuesday, data shows 1,027 are in acute care.

The last time Maryland hospitals had that many coronavirus patients in acute care was May 10.

Hospital Patients With Coronavirus Increase

One month ago, 455 people were hospitalized with the virus in Maryland — that has nearly tripled from Oct. 24 to Nov. 24.

In the past two weeks alone, COVID-related hospitalizations in Maryland have increased by more than 75 percent, Hogan said in a statement Tuesday.

Baltimore County has more coronavirus patients overall than it has ever had in its hospitals, with 160 hospitalized with the virus, Baltimore County Department of Health data shows.

Baltimore City has the most COVID patients in acute care it has had to date, according to Baltimore City Health Department data, with 269 acute care patients who have coronavirus.

Here are the most recent capacities reported by health departments in select jurisdictions that release them:

  • Anne Arundel County: Anne Arundel Medical Center and Baltimore Washington Medical Center have a combined 83 coronavirus patients, the most since June 6. Of those hospitalized, 62 are in acute care and 21 are in the ICU.
  • Baltimore City: City hospitals overall are at 85 percent capacity in the ICU and 87 percent in acute care as of Sunday, Nov. 22. There are 269 coronavirus patients in acute care, the most so far during the pandemic in Baltimore hospitals.
  • Baltimore County: There are 160 people hospitalized with the virus as of Nov. 22, the most so far during the pandemic in Baltimore County hospitals.
  • Carroll County: Carroll Hospital is experiencing a "significantly increased impact" on its system, with more than 10 coronavirus patients in the ICU for the week ending Nov. 14.
  • Montgomery County: As of Monday, 72.8 percent of inpatient hospital beds were occupied.
  • Prince George's County: An average of 132 coronavirus patients were hospitalized for the week ending Nov. 21, comparable with the number of patients in Prince George's County hospitals the first week of June. ICU bed capacity is at 55.7 percent. There's been a 43.5 percent increase in hospitalizations in the past week.

In the past 24 hours, the Maryland Department of Health reports 32 deaths in the state have been attributed to COVID-19, the disease caused by the coronavirus.

As of Tuesday, 4,325 people in Maryland have died from COVID-19, according to state health data.

The state has administered more than 4.2 million coronavirus tests as of Tuesday.
