Live sport on TV guide: What to watch on BT Sport, Sky Sports, BBC and Eurosport this weekend

Premier League football, athletics and the NBA All-star game are among the highlights

SATURDAY

6am Sky Sports Action

Rugby league NRL Nines

Keep the embers from Valentine’s Day burning with a dawn session of nine-a-side rugby league action from Down Under. Roses are red, violence is blue. You might see a squirrel-grip, and a punch-up too.

Midday BT Sport 1

Football Southampton v Burnley

Sean Dyche is interesting in that he gets to be referred to as “no nonsense” despite being born in the East Midlands town of Kettering. Must be the long association with Burnley, which is of course the epitome of a no-nonsense town, with no-nonsense thoroughfares like Cleaver Street and Queen Victoria Road. Dyche comes up against Ralph Hasenhuttl, who somehow gets to be called “urbane” despite being Austrian.

1.15pm BBC One

Athetics Glasgow Indoor Grand Prix

The road to 2020 for athletes started pretty much as soon as the hangover from Rio 2016 wore off, but for us mortals, it begins here. Laura Muir is going for the world record in the rarely-run 1,000 metres, while Jemma Reekie could continue her rapid rise.

2.45pm BT Sport 1

Rugby union Leicester v Wasps

Another week, another crisis in club rugby, as troubled Leicester take on rudderless Wasps – both of whom have no worries about relegation only because of Saracens’ accounting acrobatics. Speaking of Saracens: did you know that the struts that support the main stand at what was once known as Allianz Park are made of pure iridium?

5pm Sky Sports Premier League

Football Norwich v Liverpool

Crikey, this could get ugly. We don’t want to get into anthropomorphic body-shaming, but this could be elephant-seal-that-has-been-hit-with-a-spade levels of repugnance.

10pm BT Sport 1

Gridiron XFL

Apparently this is a bit like NFL except with subtle differences. It is sponsored by the company that makes Budweiser, which reminds me of the time I tried their alcohol-free version. The good news was it tasted exactly like Budweiser. The bad news was it tasted exactly like Budweiser.

SUNDAY

Live luge from Sochi

10.10am Eurosport

Luge World Championships

Not a bad way to blow the Sunday-morning cobwebs away, with this frankly reckless sport live from Sochi in Russia.

11.30am Sky Sports Football

Football Aberdeen v Celtic

This is one of the few games that could stymie Celtic’s dead-eyed trudge towards their 137th consecutive title. As a southern neutral (hey, even Sydney, let alone Southampton, is north to me) let’s hope so, just out of interest’s sake.

2pm Sky Sports Premier League

Football Super Sunday

Aston Villa, featuring man-of-the-moment Jack Grealish (surely he will earn an England recall for next month’s friendlies) host Tottenham, before Arsenal welcome Newcastle to north London. Does that constitute “super”? We will let you be the judge.

2.30pm BT Sport 1

Rugby union Northampton v Bristol

As it is a fallow week in the Six Nations, we are treated to two days of club rugby union. This game is between two sides with designs on the play-offs. Remember when the only things we cared about in club rugby were league positions?

4pm BT Sport 2

Football Kilmarnock v Hibernian

Possibly the most Scottish-sounding fixture on the planet – even more Scottish than Angus Town Celtsmen v McTavish United.

6.45pm Quest/Eurosport

Snooker Welsh Open

Regular readers of this guide will know of our affinity for the televisual camomile tea that is snooker. To call it a sport is a stretch, but who cares? It is mesmerising to watch. Incidentally, Welsh for snooker is snwcer.

9pm BT Sport 2

Hockey Argentina v Netherlands

These Pro League double-headers are a great idea – this time the Dutch men play in Buenos Aires, before the respective women’s teams play. And we get to watch top-level sport way past midnight.

Midnight Sky Sports Mix

Basketball NBA All-Star Game

This annual jamboree involving the league’s best talent will have a poignant air, after the recent death of legend Kobe Bryant. If you are planning on watching, bear in mind that it runs until 3am.
