Bells will be ringing Monday in Naperville to honor high school students celebrating a milestone.

Family, neighbors, churches and campanologists across the city are being asked to join in the clangor at 6:45 p.m. in a communitywide effort to recognize graduates of class of 2020.

The Naperville Park District will assist by sounding the Millennium Carillon bells.

The bell ringing will precede virtual celebrations by Naperville Central and Naperville North high schools at 7 p.m. Monday, the time and date when commencement was to be held.

The ceremonies were canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic but both schools still expect to host in-person ceremonies two months later on July 19 at their respective school football stadiums.

In-person high school graduations in Indian Prairie District 204 are scheduled for July 18 in the football stadiums of Waubonsie Valley, Neuqua Valley and Metea Valley.

If large gatherings aren’t allowed until August or later, Superintendent Karen Sullivan said the district would not reschedule them again.

In the meantime, Indian Prairie’s high schools are delivering celebration packages to class of 2020 students’ homes that will include a special keepsake cap and gown embroidered with the school crest and other mementos.
