BMW has updated the 3 Series for 2023, giving the sedan a more angular nose and slimmer LED headlights along with making some changes to the interior and adding the latest version of the brand's iDrive infotainment system.
The changes are subtle, but the more geometric design with larger air intakes and the slimmer full-LED headlights is, to us, a more classic BMW look than other current models with the huge grilles. Similar changes at the rear include slimmer taillights, while the wheel wells hold new 18-inch alloys.
M Sport Package cars get their own visual update with chrome accents on the grille and a hexagonal honeycomb pattern for the main lower air intake. There is a new rear apron with a larger diffuser and reflectors at the edge, plus 19-inch wheels. The M Sport also gets a new Adaptive M Suspension with electronic dampers.
Inside is a new curved digital dash display. It integrates a 12.3-inch screen for the cluster and a 14.9-inch display for the infotainment system. It looks like the screen layout in the i4 Gran Coupe, and that's because it largely is. Like that car, the 2023 3 Series will use BMW Operating System 8. It's the latest version of iDrive with improved natural speech recognition, more voice commands, and fewer buttons.
Navigation is now standard, and thanks to the new iDrive system, it includes cloud-based maps. The new system calculates your route based on real-time traffic data and can anticipate traffic and allows for dynamic routing. It can even help find a parking space once you've arrived.
BMW is carrying over the powertrains for the 2023 3 Series, and all will receive the same eight-speed automatic. A 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder will be under the hood of the 330i xDrive (xDrive is what BMW calls all-wheel drive), making 245 hp. The 330e and 330e xDrive models will use the same four-cylinder and an electric motor for a total of 292 hp. BMW didn't give an updated figure, so we expect the same 32-km range as last year before switching to gas power. The M340i added 48V mild-hybrid tech last year to its 3.0L inline-six, making 374 hp.
To mark 50 years of BMW M, the company's motorsports and performance division, M340i xDrive will wear BMW Motorsport roundels on the hood, trunk, and wheels.
BMW says that the 2023 3 Series will start to arrive at dealers around the world in July. Expect more Canada-specific timing as well as pricing in a few months.
