Allswell Home has become known in mattress circles for its made-in-the-USA mattresses that arrive at most homes in under a week. For our household, the need wasn’t so much about speed, but rather about comfort. I have two young twin boys and my mom—who is not so young—spends a lot of time helping me out. For the past year she’s been sleeping on a not-so-firm/not-so-plush/not-so-thick mattress that, well, gets the job done—but with little flair or fanfare. She’s been asking for a new mattress, so when I was asked to review Allswell’s newest mattress, the medium-firm Brick, I enlisted her to help.

As has become standard with Allswell, the Brick arrived within days—so quickly, in fact, that we had to scramble to figure out where to store the surprisingly tall box until it was time for some unboxing. Eventually, the mattress was removed from its cardboard container and spent a day getting into shape (though many folks jump on far quicker).

Mom, being mom, was initially suspicious of the new Brick—she’s not big on the whole “mattresses in a box” movement. But I implored her to review the Allswell mattress with an open mind, and she did. The Brick has some compelling specs: high-density foam, individually wrapped coils, a firm top layer, and a base composed of copper-gel memory foam. Not bad for less than $400 for a twin (and less than $1,000 for a California king).

The mattress touts its core firmness, and firm it was. We both tried it and the mattress felt equally comfortable for both back and stomach sleepers, along with the occasional shift to the side. I liked that it kept me feeling buoyant while on top of it, with no real sense of sagging. I am not a great sleeper, yet on the Brick I slept pretty great. Sure, the Brick may come with a 100-night trial period, but for me, at least, a few nights were enough.

Mom was less convinced, but then she’s a very tough audience. For her the Brick was almost too firm, but she is also far smaller than I am and far less open to change. Ultimately, the Brick is a well-priced, quick-delivery, lavishly guaranteed option for anyone keen on an immediate upgrade to their sleep habits. Mom may be resistant to change, but for me, without a doubt, the Brick is a serious keeper.
