Coronavirus Hospitalizations, Ventilator Use Increases In Delco

DELAWARE COUNTY, PA — The coronavirus's presence seems to be waning a bit, but it still poses a risk to vulnerable populations. In Delaware County, half of the key metrics used to monitor the county's progress have seen increased numbers.

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the number of people hospitalized for the coronavirus, the number of people on ventilators, and the number of people hospitalized with coronavirus-like illnesses have increased.

Over the past week, average daily hospitalizations went up from 14.6 to 18.4.

The average number of people on ventilators increased as well, rising from 1 to 3.7 over the past week.

Also, hospital visits for coronavirus-like illnesses increased, albeit very slightly. Over the past week that figure increased from 0.6 percent to 1 percent.

The three other metrics — newly reported confirmed cases, the incidence rate per 100,000 residents, and the PCT testing positivity rate — have dropped.

New cases went down from 256 to 239 over the past week.

The incidence rate per 100,000 people decreased from 45.3 to 42.3

And lastly, the positivity rate went down from 3.2 percent to 2.7 percent.

As of Wednesday, Delaware County has had a total of 11,572 cases; 796 people have died from the virus in the county, 614 of those deaths have been nursing home or long term care facility residents.
